AWS OpsWorks is an application management service that makes it easy to deploy and operate applications. It allows users to define an application's architecture and components through templates or custom specifications. AWS OpsWorks provides automation to scale applications based on time or load, and dynamic configuration as the environment scales. The document then demonstrates how to use AWS OpsWorks to install an HTTP server and deploy a static website using Chef recipes.

2. In these slides of DevOps Journey, we will demonstrate how to use
AWS Opsworks – A DevOps tool from AWS.
AWS OpsWorks is an application management service that makes it
easy to deploy and operate applications of all shapes and sizes.
You can define the application’s architecture and the specification of
each component including package installation, software
configuration and resources such as storage.

3. Start from templates for common technologies like application
servers and databases or build your own to perform any task that can
be scripted.
AWS OpsWorks includes automation to scale your application based
on time or load and dynamic configuration to orchestrate changes as
your environment scales.

4. We are going to install a web server (httpd) and deploying a simple
static website having index.html page using chef recipes in AWS
OpsWorks.
So For this , we have written a cookbook that will
1) install a web server (httpd)
2) copy a simple index.html file from template to /var/www/html
3) restart the httpd server.

5. Lets start step by step :
Step 1 : Signin to
AWS Console and
Open Click on
OpsWorks.

6. Step 2 : Click on Add your first stack.

7. Step 3: Fill the required details and click on Advaanced.

8. Step 4 : Make
custom chef
cookbook to
“YES”. Enter
the S3 URL of
your cookbook
zipped file.
Pass Access key
and Secret Key
of IAM User
who has
permission to
S3 and EC2.
Click on create.

9. Step 5 : Click on Add a Layer.

10. Step 6 : Select Layer type as custom and Enter Layer Name and its
short name.

11. Step 7 : Click on Recipes and Edit it.

12. Step 8 : Enter your cookbook name in Text Box just right to Setup and
click on + Sign.

13. Step 9 : Click on add an instance.

14. Step 10 : Select New Tab and enter instance configuration. Click on
add instance.

15. Step 11 : Click on start and monitor (It may take 5-7 minutes
depending upon the instance size and cookbook complexity).

16. Step 12: Wait till it becomes online.

17. Step 13 : Copy its public ip and try to hit in a browser to check
cookbook ran fine or not ?
So this is how we can use AWS OpsWorks and use custom cookbooks in it.
