The UNCW Surfrider Group constitution outlines the purpose and structure of the student organization. 1. UNCW Surfrider Group Constitution
ARTICLE I. NAME The name of this organization is the UNCW Surfrider Group.
ARTICLE II. AFFILIATION The UNCW Surfrider Group is affiliated with The
International Surfrider Foundation.
ARTICLE III. PURPOSE The purpose of the UNCW Surfrider Group is to:
1. Increase student interest in the goals of the International Surfrider Foundation.
2. Provide opportunity for discussion of current events and activities among
students.
3. Provide educational programming to local schools on issues that are pertinent to
the Surfrider Foundation.
4. Organize local programs (beach sweeps, films, etc.) to actively involve UNCW
students in conservation and activism in Wilmington and it’s surrounding areas.
ARTICLE IV. ADHERENCE TO POLICY This organization will adhere to all
University rules, regulations, and policies as well as adhere to all local, state, and federal
laws. This organization will renew membership in the QUAD program and adhere to
their standard policies. This entails re-registering by April 15th with chapter net.
ARTICLE V. NON EXCLUSIONARY MEMBERSHIP CLAUSE This organization
practices an open membership policy for members of the university community without
regard to race, color, age, religion, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation.
Membership and participation in a student organization must also be open to all currently
registered students without regard to gender, unless exempt under Title IX.
ARTICLE VI. ADVISOR Surfrider may choose to select an advisor who has a
background in environmental issues or is/has been active with a current Surfrider
Chapter.
ARTICLE VII. OFFICERS AND DUTIES The executive board of Surfrider consists of a
president, vice president, and treasurer. All officers will have to acquire a Surfrider
Foundation Membership. A Minimum of 10 participants must be an active member with
Surfrider Foundation. If an officer can not afford the membership, they must write a letter
of hardship to Cape Fear Surfrider chapter and they will fund the membership if they see
fit. Annually, Cape Fear Chapter will cover up to 10 Surfrider memberships at UNCW.
The duties of the officers are:
President: -Set agenda for meeting and provide for the facilitation of meetings -Delegate
and oversee the responsibilities of the other officers and project coordinators
-Responsible for maintaining the organization’s registration status with the University.
Vice President: -Assume Presidential duties in the President’s absence -Assist President
in overseeing the responsibilities of other members

2. Treasurer: -Oversee finances -Coordinate fundraising activities -Maintain relations with
SGA regarding funding
All executive officers and committee head are responsible for the weekly reports to be
read at weekly meetings.
A member of the executive board may be removed from office if a 2/3 majority of the
total members vote that the officer should be removed.
ARTICLE VIII. COMMITTEES Surfrider has no standing, continuous committees.
Committees are formed instead according to Surfrider’s needs. All committees will have
to acquire a Surfrider Foundation Membership. Minimum of 10 participants must be an
active member with Surfrider Foundation. If a committee member can not afford
membership, they must write a letter of hardship to Cape Fear Surfrider Chapter and they
will fund the membership if they see fit. Annually, Cape Fear Chapter will cover up to 10
Surfrider memberships at UNCW.
ARTICLE IX. RATIFICATION The constitution is ratified by a 2/3 vote of members
present.
ARTICLE X. ELECTION Elections will be held once a year in the second (Spring)
Semester. Only a majority vote is required to win in all elected offices.
ARTICLE XI. MEETINGS There is no set number of meetings that must be attended per
semester to stay a member of the Surfrider Group.
ARTICLE XII. NON-PROFIT CLAUSE Surfrider is organized exclusively for
charitable, religious, education, scientific purposes, including, for such purposes, the
making of distribution to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under section
501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954. No part of the net earnings of the
organization shall inure to the benefit of its members, directors, officers, or other persons
except that the organization shall be authorized to and empowered to pay reasonable
compensation for services rendered and to make payments and distributions in
furtherance of the exempt purposes of the organization. In the event of dissolution, the
residual assets of the organization will be turned over to one or more organizations with
similar purposes or to one or more organizations described in section 501 (c)(3) of the
Internal Revenue Code of 1954.
