Daniel Norman presented his project unba.se, a Rust-powered distributed causal computing system. The project is still young with some functionality working intermittently. The code structure facilitates transport between slabs (data containers), with memos (immutable operations) transmitted between slabs. Contexts convert raw data into observations while enforcing consistency, and subjects represent data topics like records. The plan is to implement more functionality, determine how unba.se differs from IPFS, publish papers, and develop apps to demonstrate the system. Rust contributors are welcomed to help with the open source project.

This document proposes an in-memory file system to provide a unified abstraction for distributed computing across different devices and networks. It aims to simplify application integration and allow data to be directly placed on devices like GPUs. A prototype would use distributed mmap over Ethernet or InfiniBand to test the approach. [1] Buffer overflows are caused by exploiting the stack frame, which stores local variable and return pointer information. Methods to protect the stack frame include compiler patches, runtime security using ptrace, and library-based security loaded with LD_PRELOAD.
[2] The author created a library called LibSFP that can be loaded with LD_PRELOAD to securely replace vulnerable functions like strcpy and prevent buffer overflows. It works by measuring the current stack frame size and limiting calls to this size.
[3] LibSFP stores a magic value in malloc chunk headers to distinguish global and chunked variables, and protects variables in the stack
Closure cascading
For a variety of reasons, libraries have become so bloated that it is no longer possible for a single person to understand the dependencies and mechanisms of the code they use.
In addition, there are many situations where objects and contexts are not meaningful as a method of demonstrating use cases to users who do not clearly indicate them.
Closure-oriented coding was explored in this context.

The goal of Rust is to combine control and performances, that is, operate at low level with high-level constructs. The actual applications vary from operating system to web development. Rust natively includes tools for Agile development, such as dependency management, testing and much more. The gap with other popular languages is filling up quickly thanks to the community, very active and fantastic :)
In this introductory presentation we will discuss the characteristics that make Rust unique, including the concepts of Ownership, Borrowing, and Lifetimes.

There are decisions that need to be made concerning which tools and infrastructure to use. There are many choices with respect to container managers, orchestration frameworks, and resource schedulers that are readily available today and some that may be available tomorrow including:]

Each has its own strengths and weaknesses; each has unique characteristics that may make it suitable, or unsuitable, for Spark. Understanding these differences is critical to the successful deployment of Spark on Docker containers.

Simon Peyton Jones: Managing parallelism
If you want to program a parallel computer, it obviously makes sense to start with a computational paradigm in which parallelism is the default (ie functional programming), rather than one in which computation is based on sequential flow of control (the imperative paradigm). And yet, and yet ... functional programmers have been singing this tune since the 1980s, but do not yet rule the world. In this talk I’ll say why I think parallelism is too complex a beast to be slain at one blow, and how we are going to be driven, willy-nilly, towards a world in which side effects are much more tightly controlled than now. I’ll sketch a whole range of ways of writing parallel program in a functional paradigm (implicit parallelism, transactional memory, data parallelism, DSLs for GPUs, distributed processes, etc, etc), illustrating with examples from the rapidly moving Haskell community, and identifying some of the challenges we need to tackle.

It used to be that to set up a serious network, you needed to stock racks and racks with specialized proprietary single-purpose boxes. This was because only specialized hardware could handle the hundreds of gigabits per second that might flow through any given box.
Things have changed. With the rise of cheap commodity Xeon-based servers and widespread availability of 10 gigabit network cards, an off-the-shelf server with a few NICs can now handle the workload. The age of open source software-driven routers is fully here -- but it doesn't look like what we thought it would, 10 years ago.
We thought it would be Linux everywhere, but it turns out that Linux's networking stack is just too slow. To get around this problem, modern high-speed software switches bypass the kernel entirely, instead booting network cards and handling traffic entirely from user-space. The up-side of this is that now we have the possibility of using pleasant, hackable, open source, standalone software stacks to deliver network applications that are tailored to specific needs.
This talk presents Snabb, a toolkit for building user-space network functions. Snabb is entirely written in the expressive Lua language, minimizing the amount of code that you have to write to get stuff done. Snabb specifically uses the LuaJIT implementation of Lua, giving us excellent code generation as
well as efficient access to low-level binary data and AVX2 assembly generation.
Snabb's goal is to be "rewritable software": software that's so simple that you could explain it to someone and they could write their own. By the end of the presentation, you too should have this feeling.
We will also describe how Snabb is used in practice in major telecoms and ISPs to provide IPv6 transition technologies to entire countries. Using Snabb allowed a small team of open-source hackers to ship a product that competed favorably
against offerings from traditional network vendors.
