Effectiveness
ICT tools can be applied in various aspect of teaching. In my opinion, ICT can often enhance the
effectiveness. For example, when teaching functions and graphs in Mathematics, graphic calculator can
be used to demonstrate the shape of the graph of the function (Sutherland, 2009). It is a useful aid
especially for the weak students. Since it can plot the graph promptly, it helps them by linking up the
algebra (function) and the geometry (graph). Even if they do not have a graphic calculator, there are
several websites in the Internet that provide similar service, which can easily be obtained by the student
at home.
Teacher’s Role
The teacher’s role is changing when more and more ICT elements is infused in education. For instance,
nowadays many schools have eClass system. The teachers not only need to handle daily teaching, but
also maintaining the system. They also need to acquire new knowledge of the ICT tools, which may take
up much of their leisure time. Therefore, applying ICT in education could increase the pressure of the
teachers.
Moreover, the teachers need to be aware of the ethical issues, such as copyright and inappropriate
materials. They need to convey the correct attitude to the students.
2. Better yet, ICT tools, if used appropriately, can help the students to learn by themselves. The students
can easily obtain information from the Internet by themselves. They can be less dependent to the
teacher. This could, on the other hand, reduce the workload the teacher.
Individual Difference
It has been claimed that ICT plays a crucial role in the development and modernization in a place. It is
controversial whether ICT could help to resolve social inequality. Some author suggested that ICT may
even exacerbate inequality (Vrasidas, Zembylas & Glass, 2009). In my opinion, ICT may also induce
individual difference in a micro sense. For example, students from a higher SES background are more
likely to be able to purchase a computer of better quality. They will certainly have an advantage over the
remaining students. Somehow, ICT may speed up the differentiation between the strong students and
the weak ones. The school has to be aware of this potential danger. One way to resolve such difficulties
is to provide notebook computer loan service to students. However, it seems that it is not a common
practice in the secondary schools in Hong Kong yet, maybe due to the lack of recourses.
Conclusion
Applying ICT is now an indispensible part in the in education in Hong Kong, because the economic in
Hong Kong is becoming more modernized. One had to be alert about the advantages and disadvantages
of using ICT. In short, ICT ought to be included in any teacher development programs.
