Today, Africa is in the grip of an unprecedented crisis, heightened by the inability of homegrown African organizations to engage readily in the search for solutions to the continent’s problems. Across the continent, people are forcibly displaced from their homes and countries for several reasons, the most common being conflict and/or natural disaster related. Neither international aid nor international interventions on their own have significantly reduced vulnerability nor brought enduring solutions. An enhanced involvement of well-resourced and well-equipped African actors could improve both the effectiveness of interventions and the sustainability of subsequent recovery programmes
On a positive note, millions of displaced persons have been able to experience a voluntary, safe and dignified return home. However, with an estimated 22 million people remaining forcibly displaced across the continent, significant challenges remain.

WASH United Striking Wash Communications

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) in an education context equitably involves teachers, pupils, community members, organisational representatives and researchers, with a commitment to sharing power and resources and drawing on the unique strengths that each partner brings. The aim through this approach is to increase knowledge and understanding of a given phenomenon and integrate the knowledge gained into interventions, policy and social change to improve the health and quality of life of those in the school community. Sightsavers, a disability-focused iNGO, has been implementing a community-based participatory research approach (CBPR) within its education and social inclusion research in the global South. This paper describes the CBPR methodology, how it works within international development, and its impact on Sightsavers interventions in schools. Specific reference will be made to working with teachers as peer researchers – including those with disabilities, training material for peer researchers, CBPR ethical principles, and community analysis of data.

How National Wildlife Federation Uses Online Community to Drive Offline Action
Confronting today’s environmental challenges, such as climate change and water sustainability, requires the environmental movement to respond with an unprecedented level of creativity and energy. However, command and control campaigns that are centrally-organized and pushed via grassroot methods, are not sufficient to unleash the scale of response needed to be successful.
In this webinar (http://www.smallworldlabs.com/learn/webinars/nwf) we took a look into a focused NWF online community that allows members to connect with one another and take action on campaigns and local environmental sustainability projects. Courtney Cochran from NWF and Lindsay Razzaz from Small World Labs walked through what was learned during the buildout of this community, as well as some of the technological tools introduced and measurable results achieved throughout the process.

- Lack of sexual health education and knowledge about contraception among teenagers
- Social and cultural norms that promote early sexual activity and do not support contraceptive use
- Poverty and lack of empowerment that limit teenagers' options and access to sexual health services
- Peer pressure and need for social acceptance that can encourage risky sexual behavior
- Absence of parental monitoring, communication and guidance on sexuality and relationships
- Unmet need for love, affection and self-worth that increases vulnerability to risky relationships
- Mental health issues like low self-esteem, depression which impact decision making
