What is Universally Designed
Instruction? (UDL)
 UDL is a way to ensure that each student
achieves success in the classroom.
 It is a way of modifying the curriculum to
accommodate each child regardless of
their needs.
 Helps students become an “expert
learner” (video).
3 Principles of UDL
 1) Provide multiple means of representation.
 2)Provide multiple means of action and
expression
 3)Provide multiple means of engagement.
 These help to make sure information is
absorbed and understood by the student.

How can I implement UDL?
 Deciding what the barriers are for each
student and planning to move around these
barriers and learn the information.
 Working with other teachers to decide how to
teach to reach all students.
 UDL is good for EVERYONE. Not any specific
type of student/person.
 Taking the time to make sure that each lesson
can be understood by every type of student
in your classroom.
