 This successful banker was born on March 15 in
Mumbai, India, to a traditional upper-middle class
Gujarati family which was originally into cotton trading.
 He received his earlier education from the Hindi Vidya
Bhavan, Mumbai. Uday was very sharp in math. Other
than studies, Uday was highly fascinated with the game
of cricket. He used to be the captain of the school’s
cricket team.
 After completing his high school education, Kotak
earned his bachelor’s degree from Sydenham College.
In 1982, he received his post graduation degree in
management studies from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of
Management Studies. Uday used to play cricket during
his college days too.
Relationship and Personal Life
 Uday Kotak is married to Pallavi Kotak. In 1985, the
couple met for the first time in a party and fell in
love. They got married within two months of dating.
Pallavi could be regarded as the main driving force
behind Uday’s success as she supported him to
begin his own business rather than joining any
MNC with a lucrative pay scale.
 The adorable couple is blessed with one son
named Jai Kotak and one daughter. Jai is studying
MBA at Harvard Business School.
UDAY KOTAK JOURNEY
 Although he came from a business background, Uday
Suresh Kotak decided to pursue his own entrepreneurial
dreams
 So in 1985 at the age of 26, with some seed money
raised from family and friends and a 300 square-feet
office lent to him by his father, he started his own
finance firm which was initially called Kotak Capital
Management Finance
 Soon after, Anand Mahindra of Mahindra and Mahindra
Ltd. came on board as an investor, and in 1986 the
company was renamed as Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd.
 As time passed, the company diversified its offerings to
include stock brokerage, investment banking, mutual
funds and insurance services
 In 1995, Kotak’s firm became the first-ever
company to form a joint venture with Goldman
Sachs. The joint venture came to an end in 2006
when the former bought back its shares for $75
million
 In 2003, Kotak Mahindra Finance became India’s
first, private-sector non-banking financial company
(NBFC) to become a commercial bank
 The year 2015 marked a significant milestone for
Kotak when the bank merged with ING Bank’s
India chapter -- ING Vysya
 In 2016, his company acquired 19.9% equity shares
of Airtel Payments Bank (then known as Airtel M
Commerce Services Ltd.)
 In 2017, the company purchased BSS Microfinance
Limited for $21 million
 Today, Kotak Mahindra Bank is one of India’s four
largest private-sector banks which offers a wide
range of financial services including banking,
stockbroking, investment banking, car finance, life
and general insurance and asset management.
With around 1,600 branches, the bank has
presence all across India and in several major cities
around the globe
 Currently, Kotak himself owns around 26% of Kotak
Mahindra Bank and is the world’s richest self-
made banker
 Kotak is a firm believer in the concept of
empowerment using education and through the
Kotak Education Foundation runs several
programmes to benefit the underprivileged
NET WORTH
 As per Forbes, Uday kotak is worth 7.6 billion
dollars or we can say that he is having around
Rs.42,000 Crores. It is really a pleasant surprise to
know that he has made a fortune within 2 decades
after coming from nowhere. Remember, none of his
family members are from financial business world.
He started everything from scratch and borrowed
money from friends, apart from investing his own
savings.

 Today, Kotak Mahindra Bank has the second highest

bank’s market capitalization has risen 30 times since it
went public in 1992 to about $6 billion. Kotak presently
owns 48 percent of the stock. It has gained popularity all
over the world with its tag line “Think Investments, Think
Kotak”.
TURNING POINT
 Uday realized the vital importance of the banking
industry in the flourishing market like India and the
stringent control of the government over this sector.
After having established himself firmly as a service
provider in the non banking sector, he wanted to make
an entry and explore the banking sector. He observed
that the sector was controlled by ineffective state owned
banks and also the helplessness of the foreign banks to
open new branches because of the regulatory
approvals. He predicted that since Central Bank has
barricaded foreign banks to acquire more than 5% of
any domestic banks till 2009, his bank will derive its
market share at the cost of state-owned banks.
o Therefore Mr. Kotak decided to make an entry into
the banking sector by applying for a banking license
with the RBI and was finally granted with the same
in 2003. The banking license allowed Uday to
operate at least six different businesses from a
single dais. As quoted by Uday himself “A dramatic
change has taken place in India. This nation of
savers has turned into a nation of investors and
spenders. That's an exploding opportunity for a
banker”.
HISTORY
 In 1985, Uday Kotak founded what later became an
Indian financial services conglomerate. In February
2003, Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd. (KMFL), the
group’s flagship company, received a banking
licence from the Reserve Bank of India. With this
KMFL became the first non-banking finance
company in India to be converted into a bank.
 In a study by Brand Finance Banking 500 published
in February 2014 by Banker magazine, KMBL was
ranked 245th among the worlds’s top 500 banks
with a Brand valuation of around US$481 million
and brand rating of AA+
PROBLEMS FACED BY UDAY KOTAK AND HIS
SURVIVAL
 Uday Kotak's journey wasn't easy as he had to face
a lot of obstacles and challenges. The hitches came
in the form of investments gone sour when
companies like ABCL, the Matrix Information
Services etc failed to deliver. Because of his
superior entrepreneurial skills he didn't take much
time to recover from such instances and hence
regained his position as the top Indian banker of his
era
In addition to his caliber, dedication and affinity
towards numbers, it is his ability to channel the
efforts of his workforce to the maximum possible
benefit of his organization which helps him in
attaining milestones. This young Indian banker is
ranked as the 44th richest person in the world. He
assumes social responsibility and in regard of this
he has established “Kotak Education Foundation”
along with his wife to cater to the educational needs
of the under-privileged

  • 19. TURNING POINT  Uday realized the vital importance of the banking industry in the flourishing market like India and the stringent control of the government over this sector. After having established himself firmly as a service provider in the non banking sector, he wanted to make an entry and explore the banking sector. He observed that the sector was controlled by ineffective state owned banks and also the helplessness of the foreign banks to open new branches because of the regulatory approvals. He predicted that since Central Bank has barricaded foreign banks to acquire more than 5% of any domestic banks till 2009, his bank will derive its market share at the cost of state-owned banks.
