attractions, are known
worldwide for its
universities.
Aveiro
We have our headquarters in Aveiro since September, 2007.
The existence of a cluster of Telecommunications in Aveiro,
conductive to the establishment of strategic partnerships
and synergies, was decisive in the choice of Aveiro for our
headquarters. The proximity of the Institute of
Telecommunications of Aveiro pole, the headquarters of PT
Inovação, SA and Nokia Siemens Networks pole, were also
important in this choice. The highly engaging
entrepreneurial spirit in the city, Inova-Ria association, the
support of the Unit of Technology Transfer from the University
of Aveiro and the University of Aveiro Business Incubator
(IEUA) were also essential. In 2016, we have moved to our new
office, a completely remodeled house in the city center of
Aveiro.
São João da Madeira
In October 2008, we established our presence in São João
da Madeira. S. João da Madeira (SJM) is a small council of 8
km2, located in the Northern Region of Portugal, which is
part of the Entre Douro e Vouga sub-region, located 40 km
from Porto. The industrial council has one of the highest
rates of enterprises per square meter at a national level,
Coimbra
In 2013, we decided to create a new office and the best
place to be was the city of Coimbra. The entrepreneurial
spirit in the city, the University of Coimbra and its transfer

SHIELD - H2020
Nowadays, cybercrime is one of the most relevant
and critical threats to both the economy and society
in Europe. Establishing efficient and effective ways
to protect services and infrastructures from
ever-evolving cyber threats is crucial for sustaining
business integrity and reputation as well as
protecting personal and sensitive data.
To that end, the SHIELD project proposes an universal
solution for dynamically establishing and deploying virtual
security infrastructures into ISP and corporate networks.
SHIELD builds on the huge momentum of Network
Functions Virtualisation (NFV), as currently standardised by
ETSI, in order to virtualise security appliances into virtual
Network Security Functions (vNSFs), to be instantiated
within the network infrastructure using NFV technologies
and concepts, effectively monitoring and filtering network
traffic in a distributed manner.

17. SONATA
The SONATA project is an EU-funded project (Horizon
2020) and part of the 5G-PPP initiative. The
innovative project has a 30 month workplan, recently
started in July 2015. SONATA is a highly collaborative
effort, with 15 partners representing telecom
operators, manufacturers, system integrators, service
providers, SME developers, research and academic
institutes (such as ATOS Spain SA, Telefónica
Investigación y Desarrollo S.A.U., PT Inovação e
Sistemas SA, British Telecom PLC, NEC Europe Ltd,
iMinds VZW, Thales Communications and Security SAS,
and many other renowned companies from Europe).
SONATA addresses the significant challenges associated with
both the development and deployment of the complex services
envisioned for 5G networks and empowered by the SDN
(Software Defined Networking) and NFV (Network Function
Virtualization) technologies.
SONATA targets both the flexible programmability of software
networks and the optimization of their deployments. The project
will support network function chaining and orchestration, make
service platforms modular and easier to customize to the needs
of different service providers, and introduce a specialized DevOps
model for supporting developers.
Sonata main goals are:
Reduce time-to-market of networked services: SONATA
streamlines development with abstract programming models,
SDK and a DevOps model that integrates operators,
manufacturers and third-party developers;
Optimize resources and reduce costs of service deployment and
operation: SONATA orchestrates complex services to connectivity,
computing and storage resources, and automatically
re-configures running services;
Accelerate industry adoption of software networks: SONATA

larger transition to SDN/NFV.
SONATA - H2020
The Widemonitor is a R&D co-funded
project developed by the Ubiwhere,
Wavecom and IT- Institute of
Telecommunications’ consortium.
This project aims to develop a radio spectrum
monitoring system, covering a wide range of
frequencies, corresponding to the spectrum
where 90% of wireless communications are
supported.
The need for higher spatial resolution in the
spectral monitoring, which arises from the fact
that communications, the particular area of
coverage at high frequencies, are making
increasing spectral reuse and channel with a
high density of radio transmitters, requires that
any monitoring system makes available
spectrum probes, installed in large quantities, in
a tight space matrix, keeping system costs
(prices per probe) compatible with the budgets
of regulatory and supervisory bodies.
The collected measurements are stored in a
centralized, multi-tenant with high availability
and able to handle high volumes of statistical
data, enabling: sorting, searching, graphs,
statistics and alerts. The regulator must have an
effective intelligence on the collected data. The
communication parameters/measurements
collected to the centralized database should be
easy, economical and safe, using the Internet
and ensuring the security of data sent.

20. SYMBIOTE - H2020
The symbloTe project (symbiosis of smart objects
across IoT environments) is an European co-funded
R&D project, developed by a consortium of 14
organizations, including Ubiwhere. The company’s
presence is justified by the knowledge it has on the
use case of Smart Mobility & Ecological Urban
Routing, being the leader on the topic. The main goal
of this use case is to help solve the issue of transport
inefficiency and poor air quality that many European
cities have. symbloTe’s primary target group are SMEs
who own/build IoT platforms.
In a world of smart networked devices, the transparent and
secure access to and usage of the available resources, across
various IoT domains, is crucial to satisfy the needs of an
increasingly connected society. However, the current IoT
ecosystem is fragmented: the series of vertical solutions that
exist today and that integrate connected objects within local
environments and using purpose-specific implementations, also
connect smart spaces with a back-end cloud hosting dedicated
often to proprietary software components. symbloTe solves the
problem by providing a "unified view" on various platforms and
their resources, so that platform resources are transparent to
application designers and developers.
In addition, symbIoTe also implements IoT platforms
federation so that they can securely interoperate,
collaborate, share resources and support the migration of
smart objects between various IoT domains and
platforms. For this to be possible, symbIoTe will design
and implement an Open Source mediation prototype.
symbloTe opens up the potential for innovative business
models that are incrementally deployable. Plus, it
removes the strict separation between IoT islands to
create an environment which: has significant impact on
the market, is attractive for a heterogeneous user group,
matches the dynamicity of modern life and is helpful for
various business, home and public infrastructure use
cases.

FIWARE came as a natural choice when looking
at ways to leverage existing trusted technology
to create interoperable, standards-based ways to
unify our Smart City solutions.
Being a R&D company with experience in FP7 and H2020
projects, Ubiwhere's attention to FIWARE came as a result
of its on-going market and technology watch efforts. The
project's quick pace of evolution and its ever-growing
attention to developers made it an easy choice. The
FIWARE platform provides a powerful set of APIs
(Application Programming Interfaces) that ease the
development of Smart Applications in multiple vertical
sectors. This platform plays a significant role in our Smart
City strategy, playing the part of the standardisation layer
that brings all its Smart Cities’ solutions and data sources
together. Ubiwhere’s offer includes systems for Smart
Parking and Traffic Management, Smart Waste Management,
and Smart Environmental Monitoring, along with its City
Control Center, which allows for centralised management
of the city’s ecosystem.
Ubiwhere | Annual Report 2016 | Section One21
FIWARE has allowed Ubiwhere to set up a sophisticated Smart City infrastructure powered by standards and interoperable at
its core. With pilots beginning to spread throughout Portugal, the first major challenge came with the set-up of Porto
(Portugal's second largest city and a member of Open and Agile Smart Cities initiative) Smart City Node. With the support of
Ubiwhere, Porto has been a pioneer city adopting FIWARE standards and together have developed the interfaces bringing
access to real-time, contextual environmental data from 75 fixed and mobile units (monitoring stations) located across the
city. These tools first came together in the Hackacity Porto challenge, in June 2015, and are since then an integral part of
Ubiwhere's expansion efforts throughout the country, the European continent and the world. Since then, we have been
referenced has a FIWARE Smart Cities Success Story and have been present in several international events, in USA (i.e. FIWARE
Mundus), Brasil (i.e. Beyond2020, Hackacity Tour) and others, to talk about our experience and FIWARE use-cases.

The success of organisations is in
its human capital. With that in
mind, we provide our employees
with the best working conditions
which enables them to ensure
mutual fidelity in relationships, and
the adoption of non-discriminatory
employment practices. In this area,
are considered aspects related to
the conditions of employment,

No less important are issues
related to valuing people,
particularly in terms of vocational
training, skills development and
careers.
In performing its duties, our
employees should be responsible
and cooperative, favouring good
environment, respect and good
personal relationship, with
colleagues or with superiors, and
these with their subordinates. In
their professional relationship, they
should promote the exchange of
information and cooperation and
foster team spirit. We also expect
their contribution to the
generation of decisions, be
supportive with the
decision-maker, assume their
responsibilities and maintain their
solidarity in implementing the
same.

qualifications, experience, knowledge and work
performed.

talents. We believe that shaping the minds of our
young professionals from early on can be crucial
to a successful career progression. If the
integration of these new employees is well done,
it is bound to be fruitful for their career and for
the company. Thus, they learn and grow together.
3.

and improve the way people interact and work
together. In 2016, we invested in team building by
carefully preparing a special day with lunch and
team activies, a Christmas dinner and our
Ubibirthdays (a small birthday celebration for each
employee). To keep creative dynamic, we gathered
one Ubibreakfast per month, where we included a
