2. Overview - UB CTNext Higher Education Grant
Expand Innovation, Entrepreneurial, Technology Transfer and
Commercialization Capabilities in Connecticut
• CTNext, a subsidiary of Connecticut Innovations, awarded the University of Bridgeport a
grant to grow and expand innovation, entrepreneurship, technology transfer and
commercialization for UB and UB partner institutions
⁃ Partnered with Fairfield University, Housatonic Community College and Norwalk Community College
⁃ Awards up to $5,000 may be granted for a 12 month period
⁃ Aims to support the preliminary validation of innovative early stage technologies that have possible
commercial potential, and is designed to bring those technologies to a stage that may be more attractive
for later funding or patentability
⁃ Aims to accelerate technology inventions and startups to build new capabilities at each partner institution,
expand its innovation and entrepreneurial capabilities and create potential new jobs and businesses in
Connecticut
• Eligibility
• Principal Investigator must have a full time, tenure-track faculty, tenured faculty, clinical faculty, senior
lecturer, lecturer appointment, or Entrepreneur-in-residence position
• Projects should be related to the STEM or Health Sciences

3. UB CT Next Grant Benefits
• UB’s Technology Commercialization Group (TCG) to
educate faculty, staff and students on the basics of
patenting and commercialization
• Partners can, at their discretion, utilize TCG (&
UConn-limited) for patentability assessment and
commercialization potential, marketing evaluation and
license negotiation
• Partners can participate in UB’s proof-of-concept
Innovation Grant Funding Program
• Each Grant Application is evaluated by a Committee of
Partner Institutions.

11. Can Faculty Patent and Publish?
• Yes, absolutely! But timing is critical
• Novelty is destroyed in the U.S. upon public use, sale or
one year after publication of the invention
• Publications include:
• A book or printed abstract or journal article
• A handout at a seminar
• A poster presentation – can be easily photographed
• An e-journal paper, including an on-line “preview” paper
• A magazine or newspaper story
• A thesis that is cataloged and accessible
• A posting to a web site or a blog
• One year filing grace period in U.S. after a public
disclosure such as a manuscript publication, conference
presentation, poster or webposting. No grace period in
most other countries.
