Karl explains to Tom that the first step in learning to type is learning the home keys, which are the keys that fingers rest on when not typing. The home keys are ASDF for the left hand and JKL; for the right hand. Karl tells Tom to practice the home key positions as a starting point for his upcoming typing test and says he will teach Tom about the top row of keys in their next lesson.

5. The left pinky is on the ‘A’.

6. The right pinky is on the ‘:’.

7. The left ring finger is on the ‘S’.

8. The right ring finger is on the ‘L’.

9. The left middle finger is on the ‘D’.

10. The right middle finger is on the ‘K’.

11. The left index finger is on the ‘F’.

12. The right index finger is on the ‘J’.

13. The thumbs are on the space bar.
