Types of love What are they and what do they depend on?
When we fall in love, the intense emotions and passion that surround us affect our mind and
body.
When we fall in love and meet that special person, our lives change completely: we perceive
reality in a different way, we make different decisions than usual, we reorganize our
priorities, we change our relationships with others, etc. For this reason, both psychologists,
sociologists and even doctors have tried to understand it from its different aspects and
establish the different types of romantic love .
Love type requirements
Types of love over time
Research in this field has been very varied, but the best known theory is the Triangular
Theory of Love by Robert Sternberg, an American psychologist, professor at Yale University.
And in the knowledge of him, we will base ourselves on this article, to explain the different
types of existing love.
lLove type requirements
According to Sternberg, for love to exist, at least one of these three elements must appear:
Passion, intimacy or commitment.
Passion
Passion is the intense desire to want to be with the other person constantly, it is the
attraction between bodies, sexual appetite or arousal. It is usually present at the beginning of
the relationship , but usually decreases over time, since it is an emotion that, when
rewarded, ends up reducing.
Privacy
Intimacy is related to the ability to empathize with the internal state of our partner and to
have benevolent attitudes to promote the well-being of the other person. It is such a close
type of bond that allows us to open up and be ourselves in the relationship, have a close
communication and on intimate aspects, be the support of the other person when they need
it, respect, experience full trust, and give ourselves without censorship. . Intimacy is an
element that cannot originate until we gather the courage to show ourselves as we are while
there is mutual acceptance.
Commitment
It is the explicit decision to want to share time and space with the partner and to maintain the
decision to love her in the long term. It is reflected through fidelity, loyalty and responsibility
and is the characteristic that makes us want to continue with our partner even when we are
going through bad times. Commitment is the stabilizing component of relationships and can
disappear when the initial passion wears off or stay and grow with intimacy.
Types of love over time
Each of the elements usually has a different progression throughout the time of the
relationship. At first the passion is expressed in a much more intense way to slowly decline
until it stabilizes. Intimacy develops progressively as the relationship progresses, but the
growth is more abrupt in the early stages of courtship. And commitment, like intimacy, also
develops over time, but conversely, it grows very slowly at first, only to accelerate when it
becomes clear that the rewards and costs of being in the relationship are worth it.
When psychologists work with couples, we find that relationships usually present a
combination of two of these three elements. If this is not the case and they have all three, it
is unlikely that they will seek therapeutic help, because routine problems are solved through
communication, and if they only have one, it is probable that love will not last and may
appear in the future. imaginary a possible separation, because there would be a lack of
bases for love to be sustained.
The combination of these three characteristics gives rise, then, to different kinds of love or
ways of loving that, according to Sternberg, we can categorize by:
The 7 types of love:
Affection (intimacy)
Relationships that only have the characteristic of intimacy are typical of two people who only
feel friendship. They love each other, but they don't feel passion and they don't make
decisions that will unite them in the long term. Many couple relationships begin with this
exclusive characteristic, because for a time, they were just friends. Others, on the other
hand, the passage of time has made passion disappear, and with it the illusion of making
long-term plans, which endangers the permanence of the relationship.
infatuation (passion)
In relationships where there is only passion, individuals do not share fears or joys and do not
make long-term plans, because they do not really know each other. This characteristic is
typical of couples who feel "love at first sight" and decide to start the relationship without
knowing anything about each other, which at first does not have to be problematic, but if it
does not evolve over time, it will be difficult for them to resist. Generally this type of love
defines short and trivial relationships, the "rolls" of a time.
empty love (commitment)
In this type of relationship there is no trust or passion, only commitment. It is common in
couples who have married for convenience and get some kind of benefit from being together
(economic, legal, social, etc.) or when two people have been together for many years and
although they no longer feel anything, they intend to continue because either, the comfort
zone is more comfortable than the risk of creating a new life, or they assume the pothole
they are going through as a couple and conclude that it is worth putting up with until better
times come.
Romantic love (passion-intimacy)
They are the relationships in which there is a combination of passion and intimacy.
Individuals who find themselves in a relationship with this type of love idealize the other
person, believe that the other can fulfill all their life expectations, that they are capable of
reading their minds and anticipating their needs, and therefore , if problems appear in the
relationship, it means that you no longer love him, that jealousy is a test of love, etc. It is as if
they "walked through the clouds" delighting in each other, but without the slightest desire to
give real significance to the bond. They tell each other everything and they love each other,
but they never make plans for the future because that would mean talking about differences.
They are loves that are not very resistant to adversity, when difficulties appear they tend to
disappear,
Sociable love or company (intimacy and commitment)
In this type of relationship, passion is missing, which could have disappeared over the years.
Both enjoy each other's company and make the decision to maintain the bond despite the
fact that there is no longer any sexual desire, and what unites them is not simply affection
and closeness, but also a strong commitment to face life together. It is a form of love typical
of great friends and the most mature couples.
Fatuous or crazy love (passion and commitment)
This type of couple does not have an intimate and special connection because one or both
parties have decided not to trust the other. As the characteristic that they lack is intimacy, it
becomes very difficult to generate an emotional bond between them and the decision to stay
together is made based on the strong passion they feel for each other. This type of love is
characteristic of people with great insecurities and emotional dependencies.
Consummate love (intimacy, passion and commitment)
It is the kind of love that almost all people aspire to live and the difficult thing, more than
achieving it, is maintaining it, because over the years, couples usually lose passion.
Therefore, consummate love should be seen more as a phase of love than as a permanent
state because, although it is very pleasant, it is not imperishable. Couples who have this
type of love take great care of the relationship and strive every day to maintain empathetic
communication with the other, listen and innovate on a sexual level and get excited about
making future plans.
But, although it could be said that this would be the perfect type of love, it does not mean
that it is the only one that is worth living, in fact, we reserve this very particular and unique
kind of love for a few relationships that meet our expectations and we try to prioritize them.
All this makes us see that the life of a relationship undeniably goes through stages governed
by different types of love. What kind of love are you now going through with your partner?
