2. Introduction
• Soloman Shah, MD, has cared for patients at Virginia's
Gastrointestinal Medical Associates since 1999. Dr.
Soloman Shah treats hemorrhoids and other conditions
of the digestive system.
Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, develop when
increased pressure in the lower abdomen cause local
blood vessels to swell and distend. This often occurs
when a patient has been straining during bowel
movements, though it can also result from extended
periods of sitting or from the increased weight of
pregnancy. Other potential causes include obesity, anal
intercourse, or disease of the lower bowel.
3. Hemorrhoids
• Hemorrhoids fall into one of two categories. The internal
variety occur in the interior lining of the lower rectum and
are asymptomatic as long as they remain inside the anus. In
some cases, however, the hemorrhoid will prolapse out of
the anal opening and cause the patient discomfort.
External hemorrhoids, which develop beneath the skin
surrounding the anus, are by nature more uncomfortable
than their internal counterparts. The skin around the
protruding mass, may become irritated and can begin to
bleed. In some cases, an external hemorrhoid can develop
a blood clot, which can cause severe pain and swelling until
the clot dissolves.
