What A
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lining of the anus that
may occur close to the anal opening, these are known
as external hemorrhoids. The two other types are
internal hemorrhoids which occur higher in the anal
canal, and a prolapse hemorrhoid which appear are on
the outside of the anus.
3. Hemorrhoids:
What Causes
Some people may have a congenital weakness of the
veins in the anus which make the development of
hemorrhoids more likely. Hemorrhoids are usually
caused by increased pressure in the veins of the anus,
normally due to straining to pass hard faeces.
Such faeces may result from a poor diet that has too
many highly refined foods that lack sufficient fibre. It is
also very common for pregnant women to develop
hemorrhoids but once the baby is born they normally
heal themselves.
4. Symptoms:
Rectal bleeding and increasing discomfort, even pain on
defecation are the most common features. Prolapsed
hemorrhoids often produce a kind of mucous discharge
and itching around the anal opening.
One of the complications from a prolapse hemorrhoid is
thrombosis and strangulation which causes a clot to form
in the vein, and does not spring back into the position of
the anus. Its blood supply is then reduced and this can
cause extreme pain and may result in prolonged bleeding.
