The Revolution will not be Televised...but if you're lucky, it'll be memed.Tara Hunt
I gave this presentation at CTAM Canada's annual gathering at Corus HQ in Toronto on June 20th. I think it's safe to say that it was a bit...um...controversial.
In order to prepare for this talk, I poured over mutiple reports and studies about the state of the Canadian Media and Entertainment industry. These reports included a lot of hand-wringing over online and American VOD services (Neflix, etc), but really discounted "User-Uploaded Video" (or "User-Generated Content") as largely irrelevant (except for the CRTC, who seems to want to regulate and tax creators).
So...that's what I focused on in here: UGC, including Creators (and online influencers), remix/mashup culture, stans/super fans, and social media content in general.
Three points where I think the audience winced:
1. with the enormous growth in available content, we are seeing a huge appetite for diverse stories - we don't need any more content aimed at white people.
2. the biggest competitors for attention are your own audience, who are no longer "consumers"...they are creators. And there are many of them and growing.
3. stop worrying about people stealing your content. Content isn't where the value lies. Attention is where the value lies. You should be encouraging them to steal! It's free marketing!
I guess I can understand why my message was a little controversial, but I want to help, not hurt.
The document discusses a Kickstarter campaign for a documentary about Gamergate that failed to reach its funding goal. While the documentary claimed to take a neutral stance, the description suggests it actually supported the anti-Gamergate perspective. Critics argue it is unrealistic to view professional athletes as role models simply because of their sports abilities, and that their moral character cannot be assumed based on athletic skill alone. The essay also analyzes a 19th century Russian novella about a woman whose inner poetic world is only accessed through dreams, highlighting gender differences in who was perceived to legitimately engage with poetry at that time.
The document provides instructions for installing an access control system at a college dormitory. It outlines the project scope, objectives, assumptions, constraints, and key considerations. The main goal is to install the access control system before February 1st for under $24,000. Assumptions include having space and minimal students during installation. Constraints constrain the budget to a 10% increase and completion to within 45 days. The project aims to meet time and budget while ensuring security for students.
A look at emerging trends in content. This is the latest version which was delivered at Content Strategy Philly, May 24th, 2016. Premiered at Content Camp + PodCamp Philly on September 19th, 2015.

1. Come up with several television shows that serve as examples of
“quality” programs and “trashy” programs. What characteristics
determine their quality (plots, subject matter, themes, characters…)?
Determining what is considered “quality” or “trashy” programs involves a
variety of aspects. Someone may consider a television show “trashy” while
another will consider it humorous and enjoyable. In my opinion, I consider
reality television shows like Keeping Up With The Kardashians and The Real
Housewives of Beverly Hills “trashy” or “in bad taste”. The content of these
shows put out an unrealistic reality for the viewer while simultaneously being
over-dramatic and scripted. There is not a plot or message they are intending
to get across and the shows exploit the lives of the people involved. On the
other hand, television networks and shows like 60 Minutes, House Hunters,
or The Discovery Channel serves a purpose. These programs are either
meant to be educational or useful in the day-to-day life of the viewer. These
television shows are intended to offer knowledge and useful ideas.
2. Is there anything you can think of that is “universally trashy”? Or
universally in good taste?
Throughout the world and society, I don’t believe there is anything
that is “universally trashy” or “universally in good taste”. There are
a variety of factors that go into the process of deciding what is
trashy and what is quality. According to the reading, “people have
complex cultural tastes, needs, and interests based on different
backgrounds and dispositions” (Media & Culture, 23). Since people
with different cultures and backgrounds won’t always agree, it is
unrealistic to say that there is a “universal” meaning.
3.On the whole, are Americans seen as having good taste? Why or why
not? Is there a country/culture that always seems tasteful in its cultural
products?
I think Americans are seen as having good taste. The amount of
awards and accredited actors, directors, producers, and writers
demonstrates that Americans have the upper-hand with delivering
programs in a tasteful manner. Although some cultures view
Americans as having “bad taste” because of the amount of reality
television and stereotypes, there is no denying that Americans have
the creativity, resources, and dedication to make outstanding
works of products. Coinciding with this, I believe Americans are
always tasteful with their cultural products because of their passion
and access to resources.
4.Which model (Culture as Skyscraper or Culture as Map) makes more
sense to you and why?
The Culture as a Map makes more sens.
The document discusses the concept of "the new normal" and presents examples of how brands have effectively communicated their essence through various channels. It begins with quotes highlighting increasing fragmentation and challenges finding core truths. It then provides examples of brands like BMW, Halo 3, Apple, Burger King, T-Mobile, and Sagami that successfully captured their brand's truth and elevated their positioning through creative online campaigns that spread virally. These campaigns communicated meaning and inspired audiences while achieving business goals.

Documentaries have different purposes, such as simply informing audiences about facts on a topic, educating audiences about unfamiliar topics, and raising awareness of societal changes. Some documentaries aim to present information objectively and without bias, while others can be subjective and influence viewers' opinions in a particular direction. For example, the documentary "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding" negatively portrayed its subjects in a stereotypical way to influence viewers' opinions of that community. Documentaries use a variety of techniques to achieve their goals of informing, educating, or persuading audiences.

Standout ads that generated buzz both during and after the game included spots from Pokemon, Hyundai, and Mountain Dew's strange #puppymonkeybaby ad. The Super Bowl remains a prime opportunity for brands to engage consumers through creative advertising.
