Cassovary is a Twitter's "big graph" processing library, for the JVM, written in Scala. It is designed from the ground up to first be able to efficiently handle graphs with billions of nodes and edges. The project involves porting Cassovary from Scala 2.9.3 to Scala 2.10, making best use of the new features provided by the upgraded runtime wherever possible, rewriting those portions that might get broken, while trying to maintain backward compatibility.

Calcolo is a mobile and web based game to teach kids of age group 9-13 the concept of Deterministic Finite Automata. The user is given a set of input strings in form of cupcake sequences of blue and orange cupcakes, and the states are represented in the form of slots containing either “God” or “Monster”. The “God” slot refers to accept state and vice versa. Pipes can be constructed between any two slots and the color of the pipe represents the color of the cupcake it can carry. The player needs to complete the puzzle in such a way that all the sets of sequences should be accepted by the solution. This game was developed in C# on Unity3D game engine.

Graph relationships are everywhere. In fact, more often than not, analyzing relationships between points in your datasets lets you extract more business value from your data. Consider social graphs, or relationships of customers to each other and products they purchase, as two of the most common examples. Now, if you think you have a scalability issue just analyzing points in your datasets, imagine what would happen if you wanted to start analyzing the arbitrary relationships between those data points: the amount of potential processing will increase dramatically, and the kind of algorithms you would typically want to run would change as well. If your Hadoop batch-oriented approach with MapReduce works reasonably well, for scalable graph processing you have to embrace an in-memory, explorative, and iterative approach. One of the best ways to tame this complexity is known as the Bulk synchronous parallel approach. Its two most widely used implementations are available as Hadoop ecosystem projects: Apache Giraph (used at Facebook), and Apache GraphX (as part of a Spark project). In this talk we will focus on practical advice on how to get up and running with Apache Giraph and GraphX; start analyzing simple datasets with built-in algorithms; and finally how to implement your own graph processing applications using the APIs provided by the projects. We will finally compare and contrast the two, and try to lay out some principles of when to use one vs. the other.

With each advancement in the manufacturing process, a decreasing percentage of the CPU can operate at full capacity, leading to the emergence of the term 'dark silicon'. This trend necessitates techniques that utilize chip area to optimize power efficiency through specialized accelerators. The presentation will outline key concepts that led to the dark silicon such as Moore’s law and breakdown of Dennard scaling, followed by an overview of current and upcoming CPU accelerators. The focus will then shift to vector units and the specifics of vector programming. Attendees will be introduced to registers, a range of vector operations, and methods to develop branchless algorithms such as sorting networks. The session will conclude with an overview of the new Java Vector API and how it was already picked up by projects to do AI inference (Llama 2) and vector search (AstraDB and Cassandra).
