2. Motivation
Every vote makes a difference! I am motivated to vote to help
make the changes that I think will help our country. If you don’t
vote, you have no input regarding the outcome of the vote. I am
interested in seeing changes in our healthcare system. I am also a
believer in equal rights for all!
3. What I Learned about Texas
• Texas’ judicial system is one of the most complex in the United States.
•I am surprised that Texas has such a low voter turnout for being such a big state.
•I am surprised that Texas has enforced the death penalty and executed more people
than any other state.
•Texas’ nickname is the “Lone Star State” as a reminder of its struggle for
independence from Mexico.
4. Important Political Issue
• IMMIGRATION AND BORDER SECURITY
• I believe that immigration and border security are very important political
issues that need to be addressed in Texas. Immigrants make up over 17% of
the population of Texas. Border security is important to protect Texas from
illegal weapons and drugs being brought in, along with contraband and
people. Our economic prosperity relies on safe and lawful trade between
Texas and Mexico. Many Texans are struggling to make ends meet and have
adequate shelter while we are giving illegal immigrants monetary benefits
that our own citizens could desperately use.
5. Texas and the Federal Government
• Texas is the 2nd most populous state in the United States. That
alone makes it one of the major players in influencing the Federal
Government. Texas serves as a model to other states.
• Texas can use its money to help improve the state borders and
help the Federal Government take a tougher stance on
enforcement.
6. Lessons Learned
• I learned that Texas has its own constitution that outlines the principles of its
government, and this constitution is one of the longest state constitutions in the
United States with almost 500 amendments. The Texas Constitution requires an
amendment to be passed by state legislature and approved by voters, which is
fairly easy in contrast to amending the U.S. Constitution.
• Texas is known for its economic opportunities and people come to Texas for a
better life. That is great, but has also caused an issue with illegal immigration and
border control.
