Status of bilingual education

- In ESL programs, students are assessed for English proficiency and placed in ESL classes for part of the day. However, the number of ELL students is increasing while qualified teachers remain the same.
- Efforts like NCLB and sheltered instruction are used to help ELL students learn English, but high school dropout rates for ELL students have increased since NCLB. Suggestions include requiring teacher education programs to include ELL training.

Status of bilingual education

- In ESL programs, students are assessed for English proficiency and placed in ESL classes for part of the day. However, the number of ELL students is increasing while qualified teachers remain the same.
- Efforts like NCLB and sheltered instruction are used to help ELL students learn English, but high school dropout rates for ELL students have increased since NCLB. Suggestions include requiring teacher education programs to include ELL training.
