2. WISE in WV - @WISEinWV:
Throughout the semester, the WISE in WV Twitter account was a very interesting account to
follow. Most of the accounts I follow that are not my personal friends are about sports, news, and my
favorite TV shows, so it was always intriguing to see the WISE in WV tweets about so many various
social issues. This account covered all sorts of topics such as sex education, LGBT news, help for sexual
assault victims, how to get HIV tested, and healthy lifestyles in general. The account also promoted
activism for important causes like ending bullying, raising awareness of HIV testing and prevention, and
breaking the stigma that discourages sexual assault victims from seeking help. I also learned severalnew
things about women’s health issues which included birth control, information about reproduction, and
new methods to help women during menstrual cycles. What I liked most about the WISE in WV account
is that it was relevant to both sexes and people of any age group. Although it focused mainly on
promoting successfulsex education in public schools, it still reached out to parents and teachers to
encourage them to become more active in answering questions knowledgeably about sex. There were
severaltweets that stood out to me throughout the two months of following this account, and I thought
they contained great information about the topics they covered. The first tweet I found interesting was
from March 10, and it contained a news story about how girls now exceed boys in seeking higher
education and usually have more success. Continuing with women’s issues, I especially liked a tweet
from March 7 that advised people not to judge a girl for taking birth control pills. To explain, women use
birth control for a variety of reasons, such as regulating their menstrual cycle or even getting rid of acne.
Even if a woman is using birth control because she is sexually active, this is still no reason to judge her
negatively. I really liked all the women’s issues that this account tweeted about, and I feellike young
women could benefit greatly from following this account! There was a tweet from March 30 that I also
thought was great, because it informed young people that less than half of high school students are
actually sexually active, so they should not feel pressured into having sex just because society tells them
“everyone is doing it.” Other tweets that caught my attention were about how sexual assault victims can
receive help and also just general tweets about the importance of staying healthy by exercising and
refraining from drugs and excessive alcohol use. I will definitely keep up with this account even after the
semester ends due to all the great content it distributes!
