1. History
Traditionally known as “Pearl City” on account of the prevailing Pearl fish in the past
in the area, Thoothukudi has a fascinating History. Forming part of the Pandian kingdom
between 7th and 9th Century A.D., Thoothukudi remained in the hands of the Cholas during
the period between 9th and 12th century. Emergence of Thoothukudi as a maritime port
attracted travelers, adventures, and eventually colonizers. The Portuguese were the first to
arrive in Thoothukudi in 1932 A.D., followed by the Dutch in 1658 A.D. The English
Captured Thoothukudi from the Dutch in 1782 and the East India Company established their
control over Thoothukudi in the same year.
On the 20th, October 1986 a new district, carved out of the erstwhile Tirunelveli
district was born in Tamil Nadu and named after V.O.Chidambaranar, a great national leader
hailing from Ottapidaram who led the Swadeshi Movement in the south. Since 1997 as in the
case of other districts of Tamilnadu, this district has also been named after its headquarters
town, Thoothukudi.
Thoothukudi became the citadel of freedom struggle in the early of the 20th century.
It was in Thoothukudi that the illustrious patriot , V.O.Chidambaram established the first
swadesi Stream Navigation Company, sailing the first steamer S.S.Gaelia to Thoothukudi on
1st June 1907.
The minor port of the Thoothukudi anchorage port with lighter age facilities has had
flourished traffic for over a century. The first wooden Jetty of this port was commissioned in
1864. This port was being used for export of salt, cotton yarn, senna leaves, palmyrah stalks,
palmyrah fibres, dry, dry fish, Country drugs etc. to neighboring countries and for import of
coal, cotton, copra, pulses and grains. The minor port of the Thoothukudi hand the distinction
of being intermediate port handling the highest traffic tonnage of over 1million per annuam.
The salient features of the district include its lengthy,curvy and scenic sea coast which
was an international cynosure in the days of yore for its pearl fishery; beautiful coastel
villages with their sacred temples, churches and mosques like Tiruchendur, Manappadu and
Kayalpattinam respectively, Adhichanallur, one of the cradles of the ancient civilizations,
Korkai, an ancient port of the Sangam Pandyas,Kayal, the confluence of the river
Tamiraparani with the Bay of Bengal,one of the five illustrious rivers of Tamilnadu,
2. Panchalamkurichi, the capital of Veerapandiya Kattabomman, an early martyr, for the cause
of freedom, Ettayapuram, the birth place of the great poet Subramanya Bharathi, Ottapidaram
the home town of V.O.Chidambaram Pillai,who dared to sail ships as a measure to combat
British imperialism;Maniyachi, where Vanchinathan assassinated Ashe, the British Collector
for this high –handedness against the leaders during Swadeshi Movement;
Kulasekarapattinam and Kurumbur where patriots showed their anger against alien rule
,temple towns like Srivaikundam, Meignanapuram, one of the cradles of Christianity,
Thoothukudi, besides being a major port, the earliest settlement of the Portuguese and the
Dutch, the tall and dense palmyra groves and the bushy Odai trees, the Teris and the adjacent
coral islands, Idayankudi and Manappadu and the adjacent places which became the
headquarters of great missionaries like G.U.Pope, Veeramamunivar, Caldwell and others
who, besides their missionary work,contributed a lot for the development of Tamil language
and literature and above all the enterprising and hard working people who now constitute a
major trading community in the State.
Location
Thoothukudi district is situated in the extreme South-Eastern corner of Tamil Nadu. It
is bounded on the north by the districts of Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, and Ramanathapuram,
on the east and southeast by the Gulf of Mannar and on the west and southwest by Tirunelveli
district. The total area of the district is 4621 km². The administrative headquarters is an urban
agglomeration and also one of the taluk headquarters within. Thoothukkudi District was
derived from Tirunelveli District in 1986.
The district of Thoothukudi was carved out as a separate district on 20 October 1986
as a result of bifurcation of the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu State. Thiru. R. Arumugam,
I.A.S. was the first Collector of this District.
Thoothukudi is a port town situated in the Gulf of Mannar about 125Km.North of
Cape Commorin and 720km south of Thoothukudi and its environs from part of the coastal
belt which forms a continuous stretch of the flat country relieved here and there by small
rockout crops. The region, surrounding Thoothukudi is liberally dotted with rain fed tanks.
Red soils found on the southern side of the Tuticroin town is composed quartz and variable
quantities of fine red dry dust. The port is an all weather one. The bay formed by the Hare
3. Island, Devils point and the main land gives ample protection to the lighters from monosonic
weather.
The town is a fast growing industrial belt of South India. Realising the importance of
the town, the Department of Town and country Planning notified Thoothukudi Town and its
surrounding 29 villages as Local Planning Area and constituted the Thoothukudi Local
Planning Authority to guide and control the development in an orderly manner.
Demographics
According to the 2011 census Thoothukudi district has a population of 1,738,376,
roughly equal to the nation of The Gambia or the US state of Nebraska.[4]
This gives it a
ranking of 277th in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 378
inhabitants per square kilometre (980 /sq mi). Its population growth rate over the decade
2001–2011 was 9.14%. Thoothukkudi has a sex ratio of 1024 females for every 1000 males
and a literacy rate of 86.52%.
Tamil is the main language spoken here, while English is also widely
used.Missionaries like G.U.Pope, Veerama Munivar, Caldwell stayed here and contributed a
lot for Tamil language and literature. As per the 2001 census, the total population of the
district was 1,572,273. Hindus form the majority of the population (78.58%), followed by
Christians (16.71%), Muslims (4.63%) and others with religious brotherhood (0.08%).
This district is divided into 3 Revenue Divisions are Kovilpatti, Thoothukudi and
Trichendur and further into 8 taluks for administration purpose and 12 revenue block for rural
and urban developments. The 8 taluks are Tuticorin, Thiruchendur, Sathankulam,
Srivaikundam, Ottapidaram, Kovilpatti, Ettayapuram and Vilathikulam. The 12 revenue
blocks are Tuticorin, Thiruchendur, Udangudi, Sathankulam, Srivaikundam,
Alwarthirunagari, Karunkulam, Ottapidaram, Kovilpatti, Kayathar, Vilathikulam and
Pudur.The District has 1 Municipal Corporation Thoothukudi and two municipalities
Kayalpattinam and Kovilpatti, 19 Town Panchayat, 480 Revenue Villages and 408 Panchayat
Villages.
4. Commerce and Trade
V.O.Chidambaram Port Trust plays a very crucial and pivotal role in the devolpement of
Tamil Nadu. It is an all-weather port. Its growth rate is 12.08%. It provides major
employment to people of Tuticorin followed by T.N.E.B
Industries
Tuticorin host a number of Major Industries such as SPIC, Tamil Nadu Alkaline Chemicals,
Heavy Water Plant,DCW, Sterlite, Zirconium Plant and numerous salt packing companies.
Transport
Roadways- National Highway 45B,7A allows fast transit of Raw materials and Commercial
goods from Port to business centres. The State Highways SH-32,33,40,44,75,76,77,93,176
connect to other parts of the State. State Highway 49 or East Coast Road is extended up to
Tuticorin. District Roads connect all the Villages. Government Buses connect the District
with other parts of State. Mini buses, Share Autos connects all roads within City Limits.
State Transport Coroparation Buses operates daily to Trivandrum, Ernakulam, Kollam,
Alappuzha, kottayam, Bangalore.
Railways-Railway station started in 1899. Vanchimaniachi is an important Junction
connecting trains to Trinelveli, Nagarkoil and Trivandrum. Trains from Tuticorin station are

Mysore express connects Tuticorin to Mysore (through Bangalore). 3. Vivek express connect
Tuticorin to okha (Bi- weekly). 4. Tuti- CBE express connects Tuticorin to Coimbatore. 5.
Tuticorin- Tiruchendur passenger connects Tuticorin- Tirunelveli- Tiruchendur.
Waterways - The Port of Tuticorin is the only port in South India providing weekly container
service to U.S with transit time of 22 days. Regular weekly transit includes to Europe (17
days), China (10 days), Red Sea Ports (8 days).
Airway - The Airport is situated near Vaigaikulam and need Expansion to handle growing
business activities
