Mustafa Kemal led Turkish nationalist forces to victory against the Greeks in 1922, establishing Turkey's independence and national identity. He became the first president of Turkey in 1923. During World War 2, Turkey maintained a precarious neutrality as Germany tried to win them over as allies while the allies supported Turkey's neutral stance.
