A tsunami is caused by the displacement of large volumes of water, usually due to earthquakes. Tsunamis travel across the ocean as fast as jet planes but slow down and grow taller as they reach shore. Japan has invested heavily in tsunami warning systems after the 2011 tsunami caused over $100 billion in damage and killed nearly 20,000 people. Sensors on the seafloor monitor for tsunamis which data is transmitted via satellite to provide communities with minutes of warning before waves arrive.
