Who are Transgendered People?
   What do they look like?
      How will I know?

     Why should I care?
Who defines a person’s gender?
What defines gender?
When did you know your gender?
How do you know your gender?
Why is your gender important to you?
 XY Chromosomes = Male
 XX Chromosomes = Female
 But what about:
     5-alpha-reductase-deficiency
     46XY Karotype
     Mullerian agenesis
     Congenital adrenal hyperplasia
     Genetic mosaicism
     Transgender
Some Definitions:
Gender Role: Generally defined by society.
Gender Identity: Most appropriately defined by the self, one’s
      authentic gender.
Transgender: an umbrella term inclusive of the many forms of
      gender variation, expression, and/or presentation.
Transsexual: One whose sexual genitalia do not coincide with their
       authentic gender identity.
Cross-Dresser: One who wears clothing of the opposite gender for
deeply felt reasons of comfort, self-acceptance, expression
       or infrequently sexual gratification.
Sexual Orientation: Sexual attraction to a specific gender identity(s)
usually without regard to gender role(s).
More Definitions:
Transvestite: a.k.a. a Cross-dresser.
Transition: the timeframe during which an individual
moves from their anatomical birth gender
to their authentic identity gender through
changes in lifestyle and medical interventions.
Male-to-Female (MtF) : an individual born with male genitalia
       who identifies as female.
Female-to-Male (FtM) : an individual born with female
      genitalia who identifies as male.
An Important Point
Gender Identity vs. Sexual Orientation
Gender Identity is who you are.
Sexual Orientation is who you are attracted to.
Perceptions and Media Attention

“All transgenders are perverts and deviants.”

                        “All transgenders are gay!”

     “Transgenders are freaks and abominations.”

“All transgenders are prostitutes and addicts.”

“None of those ‘things’ deserve to live.”

Bias Related Incidents
What is a bias related incident?
A bias related incident occurs when a person or group experiences,

Pay attention to visual cues
Use gender appropriate pronouns
Use the persons preferred name

Children with G.I.D.
       Jazz
Out of the Shadows
Children with G.I.D.:
Do NOT choose to be transgendered.

Cannot be “corrected” or “punished”
into being someone they are not.

Should NOT be forced to conform
to gender roles they do not choose
    for themselves.
Should NOT be afraid to be
   themselves.
