This document provides an overview of trust in distributed systems. It defines trust as the "firm belief in the reliability, truth and competence of an entity and its transmissions." The motivation for trust management solutions is the need for a universal way to specify and monitor trust across distributed systems to enable applications like e-commerce. Current trust management solutions are described, including public key certificates, PICS, PolicyMaker, and others. Limitations of current solutions are discussed and areas for future work are outlined, such as implementing a trust specification language and management system.
