'The Truman Show' is the story of a baby who is bought by a television company at birth. He
becomes the star of the television programme, but he has no idea that his life is being filmed. All
the people in his life, such as his wife, best friend, and colleagues are actors. There are no set
scripts. There are three different worlds shown in the film: Truman's world, the producer's world,
and the real world when we see the viewers watching the programme in the homes.

With the introduction to 'reality TV' programmes such as Big Brother and Survivor, The Truman
show gives us an idea of how these programmes can maybe affect people as they did Truman. Also,
Peter Weir might have been showing us how far television companies will go in the not–so–distant
future to increase audience share. It shows how important making money is in the modern world in
the way that a person's life is being exploited all for a television programme to be successful. Subtly,
I think that he was showing us how people nowadays are controlled by the Government and in
different institutions without really realising it, as Truman didn't realise how much his life was
controlled.
The invasion of privacy could also be something Peter Weir tried to show us. There are so many
CCTV cameras everywhere nowadays, it's almost as if we can't do much without being caught on
camera. We don't really notice or think about it though, except if we were planning a bank robbery,
so it is almost as we don't realise they're there. The director could've been showing us that humans
aren't all that clever, and they can easily be controlled. I think Truman is seen as a very vulnerable
character, almost like a child. The director could be making connections between adults and children;

controlled in a huge Hollywood dome. Truman grew up having no idea he was being watched
every hour of the day, and that every step he took was being viewed by millions all over the globe.

basically controlled my Christof's orders. Early in his life, Truman was traumatized by his
father's death at sea. He grew up thinking it was his fault. Because of Christof's planning of the
death, Truman was always scared of water. The only way off of Seahaven was by boat, therefore
Christof knew he would be able to keep Truman under his control. Christof also did a good job of
increasing his audience numbers. When viewers saw the heart–felt moment of Truman reuniting
with his father years later, the number of viewers increased. Christof made the scene stand out by
changing camera angles and playing background music. In addition, since Truman wanted to make
his way to Fiji, Christof strategically planned different events in order to slow Truman down so he
wouldn't leave the island. An example of this is when Truman went to purchase a plane ticket, but
the flights were all sold out for over a month. Also, when the bus he was going to ride broke down.
This proves that Christof manipulated Truman for his own purpose. Christof controlled everything
in Truman's life from the weather to who Truman was going to spend his life with. All these points
prove how Truman was being used for Christof's benefit; to increase the show's ratings and to gain

Manipulation and delusion are at the heart of the movie The Truman Show. Carefully crafted, this
movie portrays television and its producers as producing a fake environment with a "real person"
designed to appeal to the American masses. The smooth packaging lulls the audience into being in

Certainly, television is capable of being able to bring that immediacy into the viewer's space.
But most viewers are interested in excitement in their entertainment, which translates into the format
and content of the "news" as well as direct entertainment. It is difficult to imagine that television
viewers would have watched Truman grow up over almost three decades when even the most
engrossing "soap" can not sustain a third of that time period.
Perhaps there is a message here about the content of television. Much of what appears daily on
television is boring. Every season, television producers try to sort through what programs will
capture the audience – once they define who that audience is. The Truman Story television audience
is presumed stupid for being engrossed in the everyday life of an everyday person – perhaps the
subtle question is Truman representing them? (Or us?) Why is Christof, the producer of this empty

Another image that Peter Weir used in this film is the representation of Christof as the director or
'creator' of The Truman Show. Christof portrays himself as the man behind the show and once we
are able to see through his tough exterior we can see that he is not a completely unsympathetic
character but quite and conservative. Christof is a very powerful man and is portrayed as a
god–like figure. This is shown through the image of individual versus society – as Truman the
individual is constantly trying to break free from the control and strong hold of Christof who
represents the society.
Meryl , Truman's wife is clearly shown as an actor and portraying an image of stereotypical women
from the 1950's with her fitted bodices and flared knee length skirts. She plays and overly–devoted
mother like figure to Truman. Meryl is also used for product placement and in the middle of a
conversation with Truman she will begin to describe the wonders of a product. In the beginning
Truman just thinks she is being enthusiastic. But soon begins to realise that she isn't talking to him
and in fact is selling the product to viewers. Meryl continually tries to manipulate Truman
emphasising her superiority over him. Throughout the film we can clearly see Meryl and Truman
show no emotion towards each other this helps emphasise Truman's love for Silvia and the
