Introducing: America's Greatest Makers | Intel

Trends in International Education Development

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Thank you. It has been my very great pleasure to meet many of you during this visit to Nigeria. We very much appreciate having you all join us here today to engage in a lively discussion about current and emerging trends in education. To start, I will take some time today to present a number of different trends as they related to international education development. As part of this presentation I’m going to try to do something a bit different and introduce a degree of interactivity to keep us all awake and engaged. We can engage in this way for 45 minutes to an hour and then we can use the remainder of our time exchanging our individual and collective thoughts about these trends and, indeed others as we see them. The list I present will be by no means exhaustive, but represents the kind of trends that excite and interest us as we seek to continue our support of education development across the globe.
  • #3 So let us launch off into the interactive portion of our afternoon…
  • #4 If you have a mobile phone, please enter the following into your phone’s browser: kahoot.it Once there you’ll be asked to enter a code: 724446
  • #9 A bit of a trick question, I’ve worked at each of the institutions listed prior to joining AED/FHI 360. Everyone gets credit!
  • #15 Integrated, multi-sectoral approach A 360-degree perspective is required to address complex human development needs. The key to improving lives is in generating, sharing and applying knowledge. Sustainability comes from building the capacity of individuals, communities and countries to address their needs. Partnering with governments, civil society organizations, the private sector and communities leads to success.
  • #17 No trend really stands out as the “biggest” – full credit for whichever trend you selected.
  • #22 Bacl to our game…
  • #41 So we have 10 targets within Goal 4. This provides us with a nice map forward. However, when we take a look back at the 17 overarching SDG goals we see many goals besides Goal 4 that possess some relevance to education. Poverty. Hunger. Heath. Gender. Water & Sanitation. Workforce Development. Industry & Innovation. Inequality. Peace. Partnerships. At least 10 other goals at a minimum have some either tangential or direct relationship to education.
  • #57 Education equity highlighted as central theme in UNICEF's State of the World's Children report
  • #76 Massive: thousands, tens of thousands or more Open: Free Online: via access to the internet via computer or mobile device, and by definition, people anyplace, anytime Course: High quality content from world’s leading experts
  • #77 Until just a few years ago, access to high quality education has been beyond the reach of most of the world's population, particularly people in or originating from traditionally underserved or repressed populations. However recent technological advances in Learning Management Systems (LMS) and corresponding increases in global Internet penetration rates have made it possible to efficiently reach a broader range of users—including women, and economically disadvantaged, geographically remote, and linguistically diverse populations.
  • #78 A lot of the hype & promise relates to the ability to reach a large number of people at scale, but let’s remove “Online” from the picture for now and take a glimpse at the history of open and distance education and some of the important precursors to where we are now. A lot of the criticisms are not mindful of the that MOOCs have their roots in a long history of efforts, both open and commercial, trying to reach learners at scale. Next step in the evolution of Open Education Not only leverage existing MOOCs but develop the capacity of Ministries to administer their own online professional development courses for teachers
  • #84 Quote from Alvin Toffler, American writer and futurist.
