Treasure Island - Railsberry 2012 - Krakow. Talk about concurrency in Ruby and JRuby in particular. Ruby is pretty unique among scripting languages in having not only one but six (!) fairly mature runtime environments -- MRI, Rubinius, JRuby, MacRuby, IronRuby and MagLev -- each of them with specific strengths. In this talk I will first give a brief overview of planet Ruby and its continents. Then we will embark together on a journey into the deepest concurrency jungles on Java island, where strange beasts like Kilim, Jetlang and Akka roam. With a little luck, we might even encounter the legendary Disruptor! Using examples taken from actual production JRuby code, I will demonstrate how the power of the JVM plus the rich ecosystem around it are an ideal complement to the expressiveness of Ruby -- and how this killer combination can be used to fully exploit modern multicore hardware. Creating a backlog of user stories is pretty straight forward but it doesn't help you when it comes to decisions like what to build first, how to prioritize and groom the backlog, how to scope and plan the project, and how to visualize progress. The traditional backlog is simply too flat and often too long to help you see the bigger picture and make good decisions. User Story Mapping helps simplify all of these common project issues. By adding a third dimension to your backlog, your team will make better decisions about priorities, scope, and planning while improving your ability to visualize progress. In this practical session I’ll cover the basics of user story mapping before walking you through case studies of how our teams are using this approach and the results we are achieving. I'll show you the before, during, and after pictures from several projects so that you can understand how our maps progress during the projects and how we use them to influence iterative development, promote good decision making, and visualize priorities, plans, scope and progress.

Story of Warlords: Bringing a turn-based strategy game to mobile

About three years ago we set out on a mission: We wanted to bring a round-based strategy game, a genre that most gamers so far mainly enjoyed on PCs, to mobile. Today that mission is nearly completed with Warlords having been soft launched in various countries and showing very promising data. This may all sound easy enough, but the truth is that it was a hell of a ride for the team and there were times when we weren´t even sure if the project would continue. Along the way, we´ve learned many valuable things which we believe in the end made the difference and led to the numbers we now see. Wilhelm, Head of Studio and Product Lead for Warlords, will share these learnings in his talk answering the following questions: What set screws did we touch to make the session structure, pacing and content consumption work on mobile? Why different meta game systems are crucial? And finally how sticking to your game vision from start to end can make you survive such a ride.

With thousands of new titles being available to download every week and CPIs rising high, new game concepts need to stand out. But even more importantly, they need to stay relevant for a long time. Long-term retention is the key for having a realistic shot at the top-grossing ranks of the app stores. In the first part of this talk, attendees will learn how mobile game developer Wooga evaluates new IP to ensure a long-lasting gameplay experience. The second half will show one example of how storytelling and episodic content can drive long-term retention. Sebastian will share insights and learnings from Wooga's projects in episodic content production and how to best set up your team for the ride.

We've learned a lot through doing DevOps: Every commit is automatically integrated, tested, and deployed to a staging environment. And then it only takes one push of a button and the release goes live... Unfortunately, it's not as simple anymore when operating mobile applications: How can you quickly update your mobile software when the app store provider wants to test your software first for a few days? How can you update your configuration when your app can run offline? And how do you track down errors when the data is distributed to millions of mobile clients? Very few of these succeed however, and even less manage to hit the number one spot on the U.S. Apple App Store top download chart. Wooga's Jelly Splash managed to do just that, and in this session Florian Steinhoff, the creator of Jelly Splash, will give a detailed account on how his team managed that and what he learned throughout the development process.
