3. The quality that marks this very first issue of ‘Student Travel
Chronicle’ is a testimony to the maturity of the young minds
who joined forces to enthusiastically shape and provide
substance to its form. For this, a word of appreciation is
due to the parents, whose efforts were the precursors to the
students’ commendable effort.
Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, is committed to creating
the vital link between learning in the classroom and the equally
important topical learning from the school of life outside the
classroom. The pages that follow are representative of the
aim of Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, which is to take
teaching beyond the walls of the classroom into the freedom
of outward exploration and creativity.
There were many outcomes from this intensive 6 day journey
to Kerala, which inluded visits to Cochin, Munnar, Thekkady
and Allepey - the crown jewels of Kerala, finally culminating
in the awards ceremony for the prize-winning students at the
end of this journey of excitement.
All this, and much more is yours to discover as the students
help you re-live the excitement of their experience in the pages
ahead - replete with photographs and one-liners, memories
and impressions.
We, at Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, wish to acknowledge
our gratitude to the accompanying teachers for their
excellent collaboration. I would also like to recognize the
essential contributions of EdTerra Edventures Pvt Ltd. who
have designed and taken out this journey. The company’s
efforts before, during and after the journey enabled students
to produce this beautiful magazine. EdTerra takes pride
in designing journeys that offer substantial educational
opportunities for students, while ensuring that they have
incredible fun at the same time.
We know there is no better way to conclude this message
than to give a stirring THANK YOU to the students, who were
energetic participants and willing learners throughout.

K
erala, located in southern India, prides
itself for being the state with one of the
highest literacy rates and breathtaking
natural beauty to reckon with. While it is
culturally endowed with beautiful art forms,
Kerala is truly blessed with lush greenery,
limpid backwaters and an inspiring coastline.
It became the Gateway to India for European
colonists like the Dutch and Portuguese
followed by the British, as they followed the
aroma of its spices changing not just the
demography of the state but also the political
future of the subcontinent.
Be it the emerald mountain slopes and
tea plantations of Munnar, or the tranquil
backwaters of Alleppey, be it the high ranges
of Western Ghats or the coconut groves along
the Arabian sea – the beauty of Kerala draws
travelers from all over the world towards it.
No doubt National Geographic Traveler named
Kerala as ‘one of the ten paradises of the
world’!

7. OUR
Our cities are commercial hubs but on this vacation to
Kerala we got the chance to visit naturally scenic cities
like Munnar, Cochin and Thekkady. What we saw and
experienced changed every bit of our thinking. There is
so much beauty in these places, so much greenery. Every
city of Kerala is equally blessed with natural beauty, and
in true sense its ‘God’s own country’.
Our journey began on 27th of May, 2017. Shortly after
landing in Cochin, we went to visit the Dutch Palace and
Jewish Synagogue. It was the last active synagogue out
of seven in Kerala. Next, we saw the Dutch Palace. It was
built by the Portuguese originally, but later it was the
home to the Kings of Kochi. We also enjoyed shopping
at the giant Lulu Mall.
During our stay in Munnar, we enjoyed visiting the
breathtaking Cheeyappara Waterfalls, Mattupetty Dam,
Echo point and Top Station Point. Our stay in Thekkady
included an elephant ride. It was a nerve-wrecking
experience for us. We also visited a spice garden and
the aroma of the spices refreshed all of us. Our stay on
the houseboat was one of the best experiences ever.
Our trip to Kerala was one of the most memorable trips
and it will forever be embedded in our hearts.

Built around a salt water lagoon on the Arabian
Sea, Kochi or Cochin is a collection of islands
and peninsulas. This extraordinary town has
served as the historical epicenter for Kerala
for several centuries. While it was the first ever
township in colonial India, it was also the first
princely state to join the Union of India during
independence in 1947.
Kochi is one of the oldest port cities in India and
is known to have drawn visitors from faraway
lands, be it the Greco-Romans, the Dutch,
Portuguese, British and even the Chinese. This
paved way for widespread European influence
in the architecture, culture, religion and cuisine
of the region.
Fort Kochi is a town with an old world charm
resonant with a 500 year colonial history.
Owing to its picturesque beauty, its strategic
location as a trade center and its significant
contribution to the history of the country, Kochi
is rightly known as the Queen of Arabian Sea.
9. St. Francis Church
Fort Kochi
Chinese Fishing Nets
One of India’s oldest European
churches, it was established in the
early 1500’s by the Portuguese.
Later it was taken over by the
Dutch and then the British.
To explore the historic town of Fort
Kochi, there is no better choice
than setting out on foot. Relax,
breathe deep and come out in
cotton, soft shoes and yes - a straw
hat.
Chinese fishing nets are not a very
common sight these days. First
installed between 1350 and 1450,
these cantilevered nets indicate
trade links with China. Legend
has it that the Chinese nets were
introduced in Fort Kochi by Chinese
explorer Zheng He.

After a long journey, we finally reached the vibrant city
of Cochin. It is the largest city of the state. Kochi has
so much to offer, from historical monuments to scenic
locations; it is a complete treat for the visitors.
Our hotel was awesome. The first sightseeing attraction
in Cochin was the Dutch Palace. We were fascinated to
see the interior of the palace. Then we visited the Jewish
Synagogue. The interior of the Synagogue was very
attractive. After 4 days, we returned back to the same
hotel. We went to the Lulu Mall where we shopped and
bought a few souvenirs. It was a lifetime experience with
our brilliant journey mentor Kavish Sir and our tour guide
Shine Sir. From the day we started our journey till the end,
these two people entertained us a lot. Overall it was a
fantastic experience.

hekkady is situated in the Idukki district
of Kerala. Thekkady is mainly known for
two things - the Periyar Tiger Reserve and
its natural spices. With its rolling hills draped
in lush greenery and spice scented plantations,
this hill town offers a lot to explore.
The Periyar Tiger Reserve is one of the major
tourist attractions of Thekkady. It has a boating
facility which takes you around the Reserve
through the Periyar Lake. A lot of wild animals
and rare birds can be spotted in the area. If
luck favours, one can also spot tigers.
No trip to Thekkady is complete without a
visit to a spice garden. The spice trade of
Kerala dates back three thousand years and
Thekkady is the commercial center and spice
capital of Kerala. Over twelve varieties of
spices including ginger, garlic, cardamom,
vanilla, pepper, cinnamon, coffee, tea, clove
and nutmeg is cultivated in Thekkady and its
neighbouring villages.

amazing experience with friends and teachers. Thekkady
is a very alluring place. After the Spice Garden, we went
to Kundale River. Our journey mentor, Kavish Sir and tour
guide Shine Sir were the most amazing instructors we ever
had. We wish this trip would have lasted a little longer. We
could not have asked for a better place to visit, and we will
never forget this trip. It would stay in our hearts forever.
In Thekkady we went on an elephant safari. The way the
elephant tap-danced, gave us continuous bouts of fear.
The most enjoyable part was when we were sitting on
elephant’s back and he was splashing water on us. It was
great fun to see the elephants perform these antics.

lleppey is a beautiful town in the
Alappuzha district of Kerala. It is a very
important tourist destination of India.
Home to a vast network of waterways, Alleppey
or Alappuzha is most famous for its backwaters
and houseboats. It is also considered to be one
of the oldest planned towns of the southern
region. The name Alapuzzha is derived from the
geographical location of the place and means
land between the sea.
Alleppey was described as the “Venice of the
East” by Lord Curzon. Due to its proximity
to the ocean the weather is more temperate
than central India and extremely pleasant.
The tranquil backwaters of Alleppey can be
explored by hiring a houseboat for a day or more.
A houseboat cruise in Alleppey backwaters
is an extremely delightful and rejuvenating
experience.

We would like to thank our school and especially our
teachers and the guides who accompanied us and made
this visit successful. It was not only an educational
excursion but a fun trip too. We enjoyed the trip a lot!
The memories of the house boats in Alleppey will always
be fresh in our hearts. The houseboats have become
a major attraction in the state of the backwaters. The
experience of being on a houseboat is very unique and
one of its kind. It was the first instance for all of us, so it
was very special too.
We have all heard that the beauty of Earth is never
dead and Alleppey proved it. Sometimes, by getting
lost in nature, we get to find ourselves. On the way from
Alleppey to Kochi we spent some time at the Alappuzha
Beach. The high tides and the cool weather felt amazing.
We clicked lots of pictures at the beach.

unnar is a picturesque hill station
of Kerala situated in the high Nilgiri
ranges of Kerala. It is located at
the confluence of three rivers namely
Madhirapuzzha, Nallathanni and Kundlay.
The name Munnar is derived from two
Malayalam words, ‘mun’ which means
three and ‘aar’ which means rivers.
A land of beautiful waterfalls, rolling hills
and vast tea plantations, Munnar is simply
fascinating and a shutterbug’s delight.
In 2010, it was voted as the second best
Asian travel destination.
With its sprawling tea plantations, Munnar
today is the commercial center of some of
the world’s highest tea-growing estates.
Rich in flora and fauna, it has several
sanctuaries and national parks like the
Kurinjimala Sanctuary, the Chinnar Wildlife
Sanctuary, Eravikulam National Park etc.
The endangered Nilgiri Tahr is one of the
most popular attractions of the Eravikulam
National Park.

blooms once in every 12 years. We had so much fun at
