12. STEPS FOR TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH & MEDICAL
PRACTICE AT UMP
1) Create Biomedical Program/UMP as an academic home
for Translational Research associates with clinical
studies at hospitals of HCM City and other parts of
Vietnam.
2) Identify innovative and beneficial research projects and
facilitate bench-to-bedside translation (e.g. diagnostics,
therapies).
3) Facilitate clinical investigators at hospitals to benefit
from Translational Research at UMP and collaborators
(e.g. efficient clinical studies).
4) Translate health benefits to the public via engagement
of the hospitals and its affiliates.

2 nd generation: Recombinant VLP vaccine from yeast
using S antigen (i.e. HBsAg) by Chiron, USA;
approved in 1986 .

VLP Vaccines vs. Traditional Vaccines
1 - Very safe due to lack of the viral nuclear DNA/RNA genes,
and eggs are not used & could be applied universally for other viruses.
2 - VLP vaccines elicit stronger and longer immune responses
than conventional vaccines.
3 - Induce neutralizing antibody responses to both primary and
conformational epitopes
4 - The VLP vaccines are cell-based using E. coli, insect cells
or fungi with much higher yield from 10-50 folds.
5 - Economical production, much shorter time for quick response
to urgent epidemics (about 2 months compared to the 6 mons-1year).
