Venus transits across the face of the Sun about every 105-121 years as seen from Earth. During a transit, which lasts around 3-7 hours, Venus appears as a small black disk moving across the Sun. The next transit of Venus will begin on June 5, 2012 and end on June 6, 2012. It should only be viewed using solar filters or through telescopes to safely observe Venus as a dark spot against the Sun.

3. How often does it occur?
A transit of Venus is very rare. On average, there are two transits
of Venus every 125 years.
The next transit of Venus, where Venus appears as a dark spot in
front of the Sun, will begin at 22:09 on 5 June 2012, and will
finish at 04:49 UTC on 6 June around the World.
How should it be viewed
You should use eclipse shades and solar shades to watch it. Also
special telescopes and observatory buildings can be used to view it.
