3. Eclipses
• Eclipses are a natural phenomena
occurring based on the concept of
shadow.
• The Moon revolves around the Earth and
the Earth revolves around the Sun. Each
body revolves in different planes.
• The Sun acts like a light source either
Moon or Earth acts as an opaque object
and thus casts a shadow on the other.
• The process of casting a shadow by
celestial bodies over the other is called an
eclipse.
5. Lunar Eclipse
• Lunar eclipse can occur only when the Sun,
the Earth and the Moon are aligned in a
straight line with the Earth in the middle.
• Lunar Eclipse occurs only during the night
of a full Moon.
• During lunar eclipse, the Earth blocks the
light that is suppose to fall on the Moon
and this, casts a shadow on the Moon’s
surface.
• On this day, the Moon would look reddish
as it reflects the red light coming from the
Sun.
6. Solar Eclipse
• Solar Eclipse can occur only when the Sun,
the Earth and the Moon are aligned in a
straight line with the Moon in the middle.
• A Solar Eclipse occurs only on a new moon
day.
• During Solar Eclipse, the Moon obstructs a
portion of light coming from the Sun and
casts a shadow in the Earth's surface.
• If we are in the umbra region, we will
experience a total solar eclipse.
• If we are in the penumbra region, we can
view a partial solar eclipse.
7. Precautions to be taken
while observing solar
eclipse.
We can watch the lunar eclipse
with our naked eyes.
We must protect our eyes wile
watching the Sun and Solar eclipse
because the Sun’s UV radiations
can damage our eyes and this can
lead to serious complications or
even blindness.
To watch the solar eclipse we need
to use special eclipse gases.
8. Types of Eclipse- Total,
Annular and Partial Eclipse
a. Total Eclipse – A total eclipse is where the
Sun is covered completely by the Moon.
b. Annular Eclipse - An annular eclipse is
when the moon covers the Sun but the
Sun can be seen around the edges of the
Moon.
c. Partial Eclipse – A partial eclipse is when
only a portion is blocked by the Moon.
9. Did You Know?
The diamond ring effect
observed during the total solar
eclipse is said to be one of the
most spectacular scenes ever to
be witnessed.
