Traditional Malaysian games showcase community spirit and mental abilities. Congkak tests calculation skills through filling holes on a board with seeds. Sepak takraw combines Malay and Thai words meaning "kick" and "hand-woven ball", involving kicking a plastic ball without it touching the ground. Top spinning requires spinning tops on the ground for as long as possible. Wau kite flying can reach heights of over 450 meters and was used by farmers to scare birds from crops. Batu Seremban and Guli marbles are simple games played with stones or marbles that develop sharp reflexes.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
A workshop hosted by the South African Journal of Science aimed at postgraduate students and early career researchers with little or no experience in writing and publishing journal articles.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
2. Traditional games shows the spirit of
mutual help in the community. Some,
like the congkak tested intelligence and
mental abilities.
3. CONGKAK
The word ‘congkak’ is believed to originate from old Malay ‘congak’,
meaning mental calculation which is mainly practiced in this game.
More popular among Malay children and women, congkak is an indoor
game played by two players by taking turns to fill in the holes on the
congkak board with congkak seeds (made usually from rubber seeds or
small marbles).
Each player is entitled to eight holes with the left-most one being his/her
“home”. The player with the most number of seeds in his “home” wins the
game.
Congkak is a game which played by womenfolk in ancient times that
required no more than holes in the earth and tamarind seeds. Today, it has
been refined to a board game. It consists of a wooden board with two rows
of five, seven or nine holes and two large holes at both ends called “home”.
5. SEPAK TAKRAW
Sepak Takraw is a word that comes from two different languages.
Sepak means “kick” in Malay language whereas Takraw means
“hand-woven ball” in Thai language. This is a game that consists of
six players and the ball is made of plastic. Many countries have
begun to play this type of game like Japan, China, Thailand and
other interested countries.
The players have to maintain the ball from touching the ground by
using their legs and head only. In the middle of the Takraw court,
there is a net that separates competitors into two separate sides.
The winning score for this game is 15 points.

7. SEPAK RAGA
Sepak raga is a ball game similar to sepak takraw. It is played by
several players standing in a circle, kicking the ball in the air to
one another, preventing it from touching the ground. The end of a
round comes about when the ball drops and touches the ground.
This game gives a sense of team spirit among players.

9. GASING (TOP-SPINNING)
In Malaysia, top spinning is widely practiced in Malay culture.
Tops are very popular and are one of the necessary games that
Malay will perform whenever there is a cultural performance. A
top is as big as a bowling ball and sometimes it can weigh up to
ten pounds. It is made of wood and tin.
Top spinning requires players to have
skilful spinning style, and patience in
order to wind a string around the bottom
of the top. When every competitor is
ready, players will begin to use their
special skills to make their tops spin on
the ground. The player with the longest
top spin time will be the winner.
11. WAU
Wau means “kite”. It came from a Malay word. Wau has a long
history; its existence goes back to hundreds of years, when
farmers used kites to keep birds from eating their corps in the
fields and some even used kites (the hum of the kite as it is blown
by the wind) as a way to make their children sleep.
Wau is made of bamboo. For quality
purposes, the bamboo is split and
dried under the sun for two weeks
to make it more flexible. A wau can
reach a height of more than
450 meters in the sky.
12. It is a very popular game that is still practiced in Malaysia; the two
most popular states are Kelantan and Terengganu. It is played
especially during harvest festival. There is no specific rules and
every kite-player is free to play as they wish. The most popular
waus are Wau Bulan (Crescent Kite), Wau Kuching and Wau
Sobek.
13. BATU SEREMBAN (FIVE STONES)
Selambut or also known as Batu Seremban or Serembat is a
traditional game played in Malaysia. Selambut is a reference to
the north and east coast of Peninsular, while on the west coast of
Peninsular is called Seremban game. It is usually played by girls
individually or in groups of two to five people.
Selambut games only need a few pieces of rubber seeds, pebbles
or small stones. In addition, tiny cloth bags stuffed with beans,
sand or rice are also used.
The game is often played at leisure, on the porch of the house, in
the house, in the park or anywhere else that there is a clean, flat
surface. The players sit on the floor, and play in turns. Sharp
reflexes are need to play this game.
14.
15. GULI (MARBLES)
This game is also known as Kelereng. One game involves drawing
a circle in sand, and players will take turns knocking other players'
marbles out of the circle with their own marble. This game is
called ringer but is also known by other names. Other versions
involve shooting marbles at target marbles or into holes in the
ground.
The main goal is to end up with the most marbles at the end of
the game. Each player brings his personal set of marbles to use
and potentially lose. This is considered playing "for keeps" or
“keepsies.”
A circle is drawn measuring 10 feet in diameter (according to
tournament rules) and a starting or "lag" line. The lag line is drawn
just outside of the circle or "ring."
