As developers, we are blessed with a huge variety of tools to help us in our daily jobs. One of the most popular ones that has shown up over the last few years is Docker. How does one go about getting started with Docker? Why should you invest your time in this new technology? What can you do with Docker? Let's find out!
This document discusses Docker container security. It begins by outlining common container threats like ransomware, DDoS attacks, and privilege escalations. It then describes the need for continuous container security across the development, deployment and runtime phases. This includes techniques like image signing, user access controls, code analysis, image scanning, and host/kernel hardening. The document also discusses inspecting and protecting container network traffic and hosts from attacks. It emphasizes the challenges of monitoring large, complex deployments and automating security at scale across orchestration platforms and network overlays. Several demos are proposed to showcase micro-segmentation of applications and runtime vulnerability scanning using NeuVector.
This document provides an overview of Container as a Service (CaaS) with Docker. It discusses key concepts like Docker containers, images, and orchestration tools. It also covers DevOps practices like continuous delivery that are enabled by Docker. Specific topics covered include Docker networking, volumes, and orchestration with Docker Swarm and compose files. Examples are provided of building and deploying Java applications with Docker, including Spring Boot apps, Java EE apps, and using Docker for builds. Security features of Docker like content trust and scanning are summarized. The document concludes by discussing Docker use cases across different industries and how Docker enables critical transformations around cloud, DevOps, and application modernization.
Docker moves very fast, with an edge channel released every month and a stable release every 3 months. Patrick will talk about how Docker introduced Docker EE and a certification program for containers and plugins with Docker CE and EE 17.03 (from March), the announcements from DockerCon (April), and the many new features planned for Docker CE 17.05 in May.
This talk will be about what's new in Docker and what's next on the roadmap
LinuxKit and Moby, news from DockerCon 2017 - Austin,TXDieter Reuter
LinuxKit and Moby are new projects from Docker that aim to improve security, portability, and customization of container systems. LinuxKit creates a lean Linux subsystem optimized for containers by running all system services as containers. It defines systems as code using YAML files. Moby is a framework for assembling specialized container systems using reusable open source components, allowing innovation while leveraging an ecosystem of 80+ components. It provides benefits for Docker users by allowing Docker to innovate faster, and for system builders by making it easier to customize or build their own container runtime systems independent of Docker.
Wordcamp Bratislava 2017 - Docker! Why?Adam Štipák
This document discusses why Docker is useful for creating consistent and isolated development environments. Docker allows independence from the host machine by providing a clean environment to test projects. It can be used to build environments for specific projects, avoiding issues caused by differences in local machines ("works on my machine" problem). Docker images can also be used as test environments by pulling pre-built databases and apps. The document recommends Docker for running legacy projects in a consistent way and producing applications that can run anywhere Docker is supported.
DSD-INT 2017 Docker, Compute as a Service (CaaS) and beyond - Van GilsDeltares
Presentation by Anna van Gils, Deltares, Netherlands, at the Delft3D - User Days (Day 1: Hydrodynamics), during Delft Software Days - Edition 2017. Monday, 30 October 2017, Delft.
The document discusses the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. It notes that a diverse workforce leads to better problem solving and decision making by bringing in a variety of perspectives. The document recommends that companies implement diversity training for all employees and promote a culture of acceptance across differences to reap the benefits of diversity.
This document provides a recap of DockerCon EU 2017 and discusses Docker's strategy to support both Docker Swarm and Kubernetes as orchestration platforms. Key points include:
- Docker is developing its platform to natively support both Swarm and Kubernetes orchestration. This will allow developers to test locally with Swarm and deploy to production with either Swarm or Kubernetes.
- Docker Enterprise Edition will provide security, management, and support for both Swarm and Kubernetes clusters. It aims to offer the best container development workflow and enterprise container security and management.
- Docker is contributing its projects like containerd, runc, and Moby to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation to promote open governance and collaboration between Docker and Kubernetes.
This document provides an overview and agenda for the Moby Summit in Copenhagen in October 2017. The key points are:
- The summit will discuss collaboration between Docker and the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) on projects like containerd, Kubernetes integration, LinuxKit and more.
- The agenda includes sessions on Infrakit, LinuxKit, containerd, security, serverless computing, networking and Birds of Feather breakout sessions on these topics.
- Speakers will discuss governance of the Moby project, runtimes like containerd and runc, and integrations between Docker and Kubernetes.
- The goal is to foster open collaboration and move major container projects forward as an open community.
At DockerCon 2017 we introduced LinuxKit: A toolkit for building secure, lean and portable Linux subsystems. In this Online Meetup, we'll provide an introduction and some hands on examples on how to use LinuxKit.

Bucketbench: Benchmarking Container Runtime PerformancePhil Estes
A talk presented at the Moby Summit, Los Angeles (a co-located event with the Open Source Summit North America) on Thursday, September 14, 2017. In this talk, an open source tool, bucketbench, was presented as a way to benchmark container runtimes to compare performance impacts of changes in the runtime or changes to the configuration of Docker, runC, or containerd, the three runtimes currently supported in the bucketbench project.
This document provides an introduction to Docker and discusses how it helps address challenges in the modern IT landscape. Some key points:
- Applications are increasingly being broken up into microservices and deployed across multiple servers and environments, making portability and scalability important.
- Docker containers help address these issues by allowing applications to run reliably across different infrastructures through package dependencies and resources together. This improves portability.
- Docker provides a platform for building, shipping and running applications. It helps bridge the needs of developers who want fast innovation and operations teams who need security and control.
The document summarizes a talk on container performance analysis. It discusses identifying bottlenecks at the host, container, and kernel level using various Linux performance tools. It then provides an overview of how containers work in Linux using namespaces and control groups (cgroups). Finally, it demonstrates some example commands like docker stats, systemd-cgtop, and bcc/BPF tools that can be used to analyze containers and cgroups from the host system.

Build applications with generative AI on Google CloudMárton Kodok
We will explore Vertex AI - Model Garden powered experiences, we are going to learn more about the integration of these generative AI APIs. We are going to see in action what the Gemini family of generative models are for developers to build and deploy AI-driven applications. Vertex AI includes a suite of foundation models, these are referred to as the PaLM and Gemini family of generative ai models, and they come in different versions. We are going to cover how to use via API to: - execute prompts in text and chat - cover multimodal use cases with image prompts. - finetune and distill to improve knowledge domains - run function calls with foundation models to optimize them for specific tasks. At the end of the session, developers will understand how to innovate with generative AI and develop apps using the generative ai industry trends.

Open Source Contributions to Postgres: The Basics POSETTE 2024ElizabethGarrettChri
Postgres is the most advanced open-source database in the world and it's supported by a community, not a single company. So how does this work? How does code actually get into Postgres? I recently had a patch submitted and committed and I want to share what I learned in that process. I’ll give you an overview of Postgres versions and how the underlying project codebase functions. I’ll also show you the process for submitting a patch and getting that tested and committed.
