Quantified Self and Behaviour Change: are we there yet?Lukasz Piwek
Presented on November 13th 2014 during "Quantified Self in a Sustainable Society" workshop in Somerset House, London. Here is archive for all talks: http://sustainablesocietynetwork.net/quantified-self-in-a-sustainable-society-november-13th-2014/
I'm a sports enthusiast and you're likely reading this and feeling you're one too. Whether you're a runner, a biker, a team player or an athlete of any other sport discipline, have your ever felt you would wish to do more?
Have you ever set challenging goals which you've felt couldn't be reached?
This talk shares with you an experience into the world of running and a set of achievements reached using a DIY methodology. You're targets are within you're grasp, provided the proper motivation and the confidence that there are social assets and community tools to assist you in getting there.
Regardless of the sport discipline, you can fitness yourself... for yourself... and by yourself!
Legendary wearable reviewer Ray “DC Rainmaker” Maker, offered a bold take on what the next generation of devices need to achieve to maintain an edge. “The next big challenge for wearables is go beyond making data actionable,” he said. “There is an opportunity to use data to provide immediate next steps for the user to take… you want to be able to say, ‘this is the one thing that you need to do next.’ This is different from saying here’s 5 things you could do, but here’s the one thing you should do.”
Jerry Matczak shares his experiences using the Basis health tracker, discussing features, pros and cons, data available and how it compares with the Fitbit. Presented at the June 2014 Indianapolis Quantified Self Meetup.

A lean automation blueprint for testing in continuous deliverySauce Labs
Testing in Continuous Delivery changes test automation. It demands more automation but also requires immediate feedback. Many test teams today suffer from two extremes. Too little or no automation to organizations with hundreds of thousands of tests constantly running all kinds of VMs takes multiple days to execute. Any hope of Continuous Delivery or Pipeline Automation makes these states unsustainable.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

A tale of scale & speed: How the US Navy is enabling software delivery from l...sonjaschweigert1
Rapid and secure feature delivery is a goal across every application team and every branch of the DoD. The Navy’s DevSecOps platform, Party Barge, has achieved:
- Reduction in onboarding time from 5 weeks to 1 day
- Improved developer experience and productivity through actionable findings and reduction of false positives
- Maintenance of superior security standards and inherent policy enforcement with Authorization to Operate (ATO)
Development teams can ship efficiently and ensure applications are cyber ready for Navy Authorizing Officials (AOs). In this webinar, Sigma Defense and Anchore will give attendees a look behind the scenes and demo secure pipeline automation and security artifacts that speed up application ATO and time to production.
We will cover:
- How to remove silos in DevSecOps
- How to build efficient development pipeline roles and component templates
- How to deliver security artifacts that matter for ATO’s (SBOMs, vulnerability reports, and policy evidence)
- How to streamline operations with automated policy checks on container images

Quantified Self Tools of the trade
1. Tools of the
Trade
The best tools to encourage self
quantification.
2. What Am I Tracking?
• Sleep
• Physical activity/Fitness stats
• Happiness
• Calories
3. Three Lessons Learned
• Data collection must be passive
• Low involvement is good, automatic is best
• Almost every tool is worth the money
4. Sleep
• There are really only three players:
• Zeo - http://www.myzeo.com/sleep/
• Lark - http://lark.com/products/lark-pro/features
• Sleep Tracker - http://www.sleeptracker.com/
5. Quick Comparison
Zeo Lark & Sleeptracker
• Measures brainwaves • Measures movement,
• Costs $99-150 heart rate, etc.
• Mobile accessible • Costs $99-150
• Mobile accessible
6. Physical Fitness
• Too many devices to count, here are a few:
• Fitbit - http://www.fitbit.com/ $99
• Bodybugg - http://www.bodybugg.com/ - $99
(requires online subscription)
• Bodymedia - http://www.bodymedia.com/ - $150
• Nike Fuel Band -
http://nikeplus.nike.com/plus/products/fuelband -
$150
• Fitocracy - https://www.fitocracy.com/
• Withings Scale $160 -
http://www.withings.com/en/bodyscale
7. Quick Impression
• Review of Bodybugg vs. Fitbit:
http://tweakfit.com/fitbit-vs-bodybugg-reviews
• Review of Fitbit vs. BodyMedia:
http://quantifiedself.com/2011/05/fitbit-vs-body-
media/
• I’ve found Runkeeper to be more accurate but less
convenient: http://runkeeper.com/
• Fitbit is easiest, tolerably accurate
9. Quick Impression
• Happiness data is worth 10x more than other data
• Whatever keeps you collecting is worthwhile
• Testing PACO, close to ideal
• Would be interested to hear about different tools
10. Calories
• Lots of devices purport to track calories
automatically, mostly it’s manual though
• Calorie Tracker $Free:
https://itunes.apple.com/app/livestrong.com-
calorie-tracker/id295305241?mt=8
• Lose it $Free: http://itunes.apple.com/app/lose-
it/id297368629?mt=8
• Daily Burn $Free:
http://itunes.apple.com/app/dailyburn-calorie-
workout/id378928008?mt=8
• MyNetDiary $Free: http://www.mynetdiary.com/
11. Quick Impression
• I have experience with Calorie Tracker, works well
• Still takes a lot of effort
• Biggest problem with any of the tools: packaged
food vs homemade food
13. Quick Calculations
• Average cost of doctor’s visit: $60
• Median ER visit cost in 2009: $615
• Average cost of hospital stay in 2011: $15,734
• Cost of every app/device mentioned: $1,174.50
• All of them would only need to decrease your
expected lifetime medical costs by .4% to be
profitable.
