Dear Sir or Madam,
I gladly write this letter of recommendation for Thomas Hickey. He was an intern for InFlight
Entertainment Products during the summers of 2015 and 2016. Our company manufactures the video
systems that are used for showing inflight movies along with providing LED lighting on commercial
aircraft.
During this time, I supervised and worked with Tom on projects and was impressed with his
professionalism. He displayed a respect for other employees he worked with and showed an astounding
ability to be a team player.
Tom was an integral part in designing our Digital Media Reproducers that replace old video tape
decks. It was necessary to design serial interfaces that talk with the video control centers. The design
included RS232, RS485, TTL and single wire TTL interfaces. Many of these proprietary serial
interfaces utilize non-standard formats. With Tom’s knowledge and proficiency, he was able to write
the appropriate coding for response commands for each control systems on the aircraft. His timely
work helped us to meet our required shipping dates of the equipment to Thomas Cook Airlines, Condor
Airlines, Pakistan Airlines and Royal Air Maroc.
Tom once again showed his proficiency while we were conducting emission testing and LC filter
designs for our LED lighting on commercial airlines. All equipment on commercial aircraft must pass
the required RTCA DO-160 testing to ensure that our products will not interfere with the cockpit radio
and navigation systems. One of our new products was over the acceptable levels allowed by the FAA.
To address this problem, we needed to set up an EMC/EMI testing system that would reduce outside
interference. Tom performed all of the calculations that allowed us to build LC filters and completed
testing of each filter to achieve the lowest possible EMC results. Due to these calculations we were
able to identify the frequency range that needed to be attenuated.
Tom was very conscientious in working through all of the issues on these projects displaying his ability
for a great deal of attention to detail. In all instances he was able to understand and work through
problematic issues that allowed him and the company to achieve the required results. His ability to
troubleshoot complex ideas with a positive attitude was a great asset to these projects and our
company.
I have no doubts that Tom will persevere and succeed at any position he works at and be nothing but an
asset to any company he works for.
