As smart data gradually become mainline data for transportation planning, some obvious flaws in infrastructure decision making become apparent when comparing traditional static data and the dynamic nature of human travel. The static survey, a common source of transportation, encouraged to assign a greater portion of longer trips and predicting more road widening and highways. In reality, shorter trips are dominant in cities. Shared mobility options could provide options for shorter trips. These short trips should be properly corrected and assign in our infrastructure projections when travel demand modeling is developed. Smart data is paving the way to open the door of a new possibility towards shared multimodal cities.
During the National Regional Transportation Conference, Kathy Borquez and Andrew Smith discussed Pinal County, Arizona's approach to deploying technology solutions to transportation challenges.

The Utah Legislature is working to ensure that transportation funding mechanisms are ready and in place to meet future demands and keep Utah moving. Drivers of electric and hybrid vehicles pay a flat fee during their annual registration to compensate for not paying as much fuel tax as drivers of conventional vehicles. These fees pay for operations and maintenance of Utah's transportation system.
In 2020, electric and hybrid vehicle owners will have an option to pay a road usage charge in lieu of their annual fee. In future years, the RUC program could also be a potential replacement to the fuel tax for all vehicles in Utah. UDOT is involved in this effort in order to Keep Utah Moving by making sure future funding will be available to build and maintain our transportation system.
UDOT leadership presented this information in the Infrastructure and General Government Appropritions Subcommittee Meeting of the Utah Legislature on Friday, January 31, 2015.
The presentation was used by UDOT Executive Director Carlos Braceras during the Infrastructure and General Government Appropriations Subcommitte meeting on September 12, 2013.
This presentation was given by UDOT Program Development Directory Cory Pope to the Women in Transportation (WTS) Northern Utah Chapter and the Utah Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA)on January 23, 2013.
This presentation was given by UDOT Program Development Director Cory Pope to the Infrastructure and General Governmental Appropriations Subcommittee on February 8, 2013.
The UDOT Director of Systems Planning and Programming gave this presentation at the 12th annual American Concrete Paving Association (ACPA) workshop in January 2012.
