Theorizing deeply about student mistakes is not a waste of time and can enrich teaching. Analyzing why students make certain errors and what conceptual misunderstandings underlie them provides insights that can help improve instruction. Teachers should reflect on their own mistakes and have students identify errors to develop an understanding of common challenges.
