Consulting reference
resources to help in lesson
preparation
How do we consult reference
resources?
Why use reference resources
– Check the form and use of grammatical structures (Grammar Books)
– Checking the spelling, pronunciation and use of lexical items (dictionary)
– Developing your own understanding of language (using teacher guide to
develop teaching skill and supplementary to improve your language skill)
– Anticipating learners’ difficulties (Make it clear between L1 and English,
so that they will not involve much in L1 while they are acquiring English)
– Look for new approaches to teaching lessons and new classroom
activities (Using supplementary)
– Finding out how to use material in your coursebook
Selection and Use of
Coursebook Materials
How to select and use coursebook
materials?
– Coursebook materials are all the materials in a coursebook package that
are used in the classroom to present and practice language, and to

Consideration when you select
teaching materials
– Is the materials visually attractive? Is it visual clear? Will it help learners to
understand context and meaning?
– Is the material well organize, so that the teacher and students will follow the
sequence of the lesson?
– Is it culturally appropriate? Will the context(s) be familiar to learners?
– Is it suitable for learners’ age and their needs and interest? Will it motivate to
suit the learners’ age, gender, experience and personal interest?
– Is the material at the right level?
– Does it give learners opportunities to use the language?
What if all the answers are “NO”
– Replace the coursebook materials with materials with the same focus/aim
from another book/resources.
– Adopt the coursebook material. (Change it in some ways to make it suitable
for your learners.
E.g. - Extend material
- Shortening material
- Change the methodology
- Changing the level of material
- Reordering material
- Making use of all the resources in the book
