1. Hedy Lamarr
A woman who proved that she was much more than just a
pretty face
2. Today,
we’re going to talk about a woman who had a very
inventive and innovative mind
Her name was Hedy
Lamarr.
But, her original name was
Hedwig Eva Kiesler.
4. Childhood
She was born on November 9th, 1914 in Vienna, Austria.
She was the only child of a Jewish family , this was the
reason why she received a lot of attention from her father,
who was a bank director and curious man.
He influenced her a lot, giving her the
important advice to always look at the
world with open eyes. Her conversations
with her father about the inner-workings
of different machines resulted in a 5 year
old Lamarr taking apart and reassembling
back her music box to understand how
the machine worked.
7. Acting career
When she was a teenager, at the age of 16, an
Austrian film director, Max Reinhardt, discovered
her and got her 1st small film role by 1930. It was a
German movie called “Money on the Street”.
However, her popularity
skyrocketed after her role in the
controversial film, “Ecstasy” in
1932.
1930
1932
8. Acting career
She participated in the film Lady of the Tropics in
1939. The majority of reviews of the movie agreed
with the fact that she did an incredible and flawless
job.
1939
9. Acting career
She starred in the film, Boom Town, in which she
participated together with Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy
and Claudette Colbert.
1940
10. Acting career
Another film she was part in, was
Tortilla Flat. This movie generate
discomfort and disappointed due to
the very weird and horrible casting for
the movie. However, Hedy was
considered to fulfill her role
exceptionally well except for the fact
of her portuguese accent.
1942
11. Acting career
She starred in the film Samson and Delilah, which won
many awards among them were: 2 Oscar awards one for
Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Color and the other
for Best Costume Design, Color both in 1951.
In addition to winning the Year's Highest-Grossing
Picture of the Boxoffice Magazine Awards in 1950.
1949
This film also gave Hedy Lamarr the nomination of Best
Actress in the Picturegoer Awards, in 1951. She got the
10th place.
13. Fritz Mandl
01
She got married with
him in 1933. He was an
Austrian munitions
dealer, and one of her
most adoring fans.
Nonetheless, they ended
the marriage shortly
after.
She was incredibly
unhappy in that marriage,
because he was very
manipulative and
oppressive, which made
her feel like a doll many
times, with no mind or life
of its own.
She escaped from his
grasp in 1937, fleeing to
London, taking with her all
the knowledge gained
from dinner-table
conversations over
wartime weaponry.
15. In London in
the same year,
In 1937
She met Louis B. Mayer, of the
famed MGM studios.She dated
him, specifically interested for
his innovative desire.
Hughes took her to
his airplane factories
and introduced her
to the scientists
behind all the
process.
Like Hughes wanted to create
a new type of airplane, one
really fast, he asked Lamarr to
design it.
Hughes helped to
fuel Lamarr’s inner
innovator, providing
her a small set of
equipment to use in
her trailer on set.
16. Hedy’s design
She researched about fishes and birds for
the design of the new airplane, reading
many books about them. She combined
the fins of the fastest fish and the wings
of the fastest bird to sketch a new wing
design for Hughes’ planes.
Before Hety’s help (1935)
After Hety’s help (1946)
18. She was indeed a genius as the
gears in her inventive mind
continued to turn
She went on to create an
upgraded stoplight and a tablet
that dissolved in water to make
a soda similar to Coca-Cola.
However,
Her most significant
invention was
engineered as the United
States geared up to enter
WWII.
Other inventions
19. In 1940,
Lamarr met George Antheil at a
dinner party, a man who shared the
same inventive spirit as her. She
became good friends with the
composer.
After her marriage with Mandl,
she gained knowledge on
munitions and various
weaponry that would be
beneficial for her invention.
And so, Lamarr and Antheil began to
fiddle with ideas to combat the axis
powers in WWII. The two came up
with the extraordinary and amazing
idea of a new communication
system used with the intention of
guiding torpedoes to their targets in
war.
20. It involved “frequency hopping”
amongst radio waves, with both
transmitter and receiver hopping to
new frequencies together. This
prevented the interception of the
radio waves from enemy forces,
thereby allowing the torpedo to find
its intended target.
Secret Communications System
Lamarr and Antheil sought a patent and
military support for the invention, sadly they
only received the patent because the military
rejected the proposal of using it.
This invention was originally designed to
defeat the German Nazis, the system became
an important step in the development of
technology to maintain the security of both
military communications and cellular
phones.
In 1942,
21. In April 1953,
Hedy was really happy in her adopted
country, U.S.A. So she became an
American citizen.
23. She continued to accumulate credits in films the following
years, but only until 1958, her inventive genius mind was
yet to be recognized by the public. It wasn’t until many
years later that she received any awards for her invention.
In 1997, Lamarr and Antheil were honored with the
Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) Pioneer Award, and
that same year Lamarr became the 1st woman to receive
the BULBIE™ Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award,
considered the “Oscars” of inventing.
Lamarr’s patent expired before she
ever saw a penny from it.
