Tiji Festival Trek 2017
Mustang trek is an exploration of the concealed valleys of upper Mustang in Nepal, nestled
between Tibet and the Himalayas – a place different from the rest of the world. The wall
city of Lo Manthang used to be a part of Tibetan kingdom of Gungthang until 1830s. The
early history of Lo Manthang is embellished in myths and legends rather then the recorded
facts. Even though the upper Mustang is changing it still surprises the visitors with its
stunning vista and the stubborn way it cling to its unique culture. Indeed the culture is
fighting back, crumbing art works are being restored. Crumbing monasteries have been
rebuilt and refilled with the sound of bald-headed children in robes studying the ancient
Buddhist ways. There are around 275 houses in Lo Manthang having four castes: the royal
caste, the everyday folk, the blacksmiths and the butchers and millers. The whole Lo
manthang village has solar electricity now, along with a small herb garden of various holy
decorations, flapping flags and of course stacked firewood. There was a time when it was
the mandatory of certain family to supply the firewood for the royal family. Sky burial and
polyandry are still remaining practice in this upper mustang region. Once Nepal got
republic in 2005 the royal family is symbolic only. There are no any major effects or
damage of April 2015 earthquake in the whole Mustang region – totally safe for trekking.

14 Days Permits to Upper Mustang
13th May 2017 Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1310m). Transfer to Hotel.
Our trip starts in the lively and bustling city of Kathmandu with an explosion to the senses -
take a deep breath! We’ll be there to smooth the transition; a friendly face from Adventure
Connexion will meet you at Kathmandu Airport and accompany you to our hotel to regroup
after your flight. Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and the Kathmandu Valley is the
political and cultural heart of the Kingdom. Evening some briefing about Mustang Trek
with trekking guide. Overnight at Kathmandu.
14th May 2017 Day 02 Fly: Kathmandu to Pokhara and transfer to Hotel.
We fly from Kathmandu to the vibrant resort area of Lakeside, Pokhara, from where you
can observe views to the north across the hills to the white peaks of the Annapurna and
Dhaulagiri ranges, go boating on Fewa Lake or just wander around. Overnight at Pokhara
(840m).
Breakfast Included
15th May 2017 Day 03 Fly: Pokhara - Jomsom (2700m) and Trek to Kagbeni (2800m).
Adventure Connexion team will take the spectacular early morning flight to Jomsom and
begin our trek alongside the Kali Gandaki riverbed to the pretty village of Kagbeni. The trail
is flat and quite barren, with craggy rocks and pebbles littering the trail. We get magnificent
views of huge peaks such as Dhaulagiri, Tukuche and the Nilgiri Himal, whilst to the south
can be seen the entire Annapurna Massif. Kagbeni with its narrow alleyways and tunnels,
irrigation canals, fields of wheat and barley and large red gompa, gives us a preview of
scenes that we will come across in Upper Mustang. At the north end of the village is the
police check-post. Here we complete our paperwork before entering this long forbidden
region of Nepal. (4 hours trekking). Overnight at Kagbeni (2800m).
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included
Entry restricted areas permit
16th May 2017Day 04: Trek Kagbeni (2800m) to Chhuksang (2950m).
It is possible to trek right up the river valley, but Adventure Connexion team use a
combination of the high trail and the riverbank pathways. The trail itself enters a stark
wilderness of towering cliffs eroded into fantastical shapes by the wind, which howls every
afternoon, before widening significantly to reveal an endless stretch of sand. We should
also encounter mule trains bearing goods to and from Mustang and Tibet. On the west bank
of the river are some caves and Gompa Kang, which, unlike most monasteries in Upper
Mustang, is of the Nyingmapa rather than the Sakyapa sect. Adventure Connexion team
stop for lunch at the Thakali village of Tangbe, where we come across the first black, white
and red chortens that typify Upper Mustang. The village is a labyrinth of narrow alleys
among whitewashed houses, apple orchards and fields of buckwheat and barley. The
Gurung village of Chhuksang is only about two hours walk beyond Tangbe at the
confluence of the Narshing Khola (river) and the Kali Gandaki. There are three separate
parts to Chhuksang and some ruined castle walls on the surrounding cliffs. Across the river
are some spectacular red cliffs above the mouths of inaccessible caves. (4 hours). Overnight
at Chhuksang (2950m).
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included
17th May 2017 Day 05: Trek Chhuksang (2950m) to Samar (3540m).
There is a distinct change here, not only in topography, but also in the culture and lifestyle
of the people. The settlements become more scattered, smaller and more basic and, due to
a lack of rain and fertile soil, cultivation is limited to watered and sheltered plots of land,
which decorate the brown landscape with patches of green. Many of the inaccessible caves
high on the opposite side of the river were once used as living quarters or burial places.
Continuing north, the Kali Gandaki becomes unfollowable, a steel bridge spans the river
and the trek now leaves the valley and climbs steeply up a rocky gully to the village of
Chele, where ferocious Tibetan mastiffs are chained to many of the houses. From Chele
Adventure Connexion Team climb a steep spur and then continue ascending along the side
of a spectacular steep canyon to Chele La (pass) at 3,630m. Beyond the pass we descend on
a pleasant trail to a grove of poplar trees and the village of Samar. This is a major stopping
place for horse and mule caravans. (4 hours). Overnight at Samar (3540m)
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included
18th May 2017 Day 06: Trek Samar (3540m) to Geling (3520m).
Adventure Connexion Team will climb above Samar to a ridge and then descend into a large
gorge before entering a valley filled with juniper trees. We then cross a stream and, after
climbing to Bhena La (3,860m), descend along a ridge to Shyangmochen, a tiny settlement
with a few tea-shops. Nearby is Rangbyung a cave containing stalagmites in the shape of a
chorten and one of the holiest places in Mustang. The trail climbs gently to Shyangmochen
La (3,850m) and we enter a huge valley before descending to the picturesque village of
Geling with its extensive fields of barley. Like all the settlements in Mustang the white and
ochre-painted houses in Geling are constructed of mud and stones and the roofs of twigs,
straw and a mixture of mud and pebbles. (5 hours). Overnight at Geling (3520m).
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included
19th May 2017 Day 07: Trek Geling (3520m) to Dhakmar (3800m).
After a scenic breakfast we head further up the trail and dirt road to the Nyi La (4000m),
just a half hour climb from the intersection. More of Upper Mustang opens up in front of us
a the cairn-topped pass, including the new road snaking its way to Tibet. We descend on
the road for a bit, but soon head off on a small trail and continue contouring around
hillsides to the Ghemi La where there are wonderful views down to the checkered fields
and large, beautiful village of Ghemi (3570m). Adventure Connexion groups will descend
steeply down to Ghemi, built along the steep edges of the cliff as are many fortified villages
in Mustang. There are actually the ruins of an old fortress somewhere in Ghemi, which was
largely abandoned until the Khampa fighters set up a magar (war camp) here and brought
new life and wealth to the village. We'll wander a bit through this interesting village,
passing the mani walls and prayer wheels, perhaps finding the key-keeper to open the
Ghemi Gompa for us. Afterwards, we take a small, rocky trail down to a bridge crossing the
Tangmar Chu and stop for lunch on the grassy banks of the river. Revived, we cross the
bridge and climb a steep, dusty hill. The trail looks across the valley to ochre, blue and
steel-grey cliffs, and leads us past tri-colored chortens and perhaps the longest and most
spectacular mani wall in Mustang, behind which is the hospital. Looming ahead of us is a
cluster of gigantic, ancient chortens, backed by dramatic, sculpted cliff-faces, an awesome
sight. Overnight at Dhakmar (3800m).
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included
20th May 2017 Day 08: Trek Dhakmar (3800m) to Tsarang (3580m).
After leaving Dhakmar we cross the Tangmar Chu (river) and ascend past the longest and
most spectacular mani wall in Nepal before traversing to Choya La (3,870m). Once through
the pass we make a long gentle descent to the former Lo capital of Charang, a large spread-
out village atop the Charang Chu canyon. At the eastern end of the village are a huge dzong
(fortress) and a red gompa which houses an excellent collection of statues and thangkas.
Today’s walk is through perhaps the driest part of Mustang, and much of our energy will be
spent negotiating the loose, dry soil. However, the magnificent views of the countryside,
from the gentle contours of the north to the rugged mountains in the east and west, more
than compensate for the hard walk. (3 hours). Overnight at Tsarang (3580m).
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included
21st May 2017 Day 09: Trek Tsarang (3580m) to Mustang Lo Manthang (3750m).
Adventure Connection team will climb gently above the valley to a large isolated chorten
that marks the boundary between Charang and Lo Manthang. The trail then broadens as we
cross a multi-hued desert-like landscape and eventually we get our first view of the walled
city of Lo Manthang. The city has only one entrance so we circumambulate the wall to the
gate on the north-east corner. (4 hours). Overnight at Lo Manthang (3,730m).
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included
22nd May 2017 Day 10: Lo Manthang (3730m) – the celebration of the first day of Tiji
festival
Today is the first day of Tiji Festival. We spend our day observing the dances and
celebrations. Horse racing and a giant tug-of-war are the major attractions. Tibetan women

elaborate costumes make the entire environment vivid and vibrant. Overnight at
guesthouse. Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner included.
23rd May 2017 Day 11: Second day of Tiji festival in Lo Manthang.
We can enjoy a colorful ceremony accompanied by an unusual dance of Tibetan lamas. It is
done to chase away all the hungry and evil spirits from the village. We can see many people
across the region participating in this ritual of purification and renewal. After the
observation, we can explore the intimate alleyways and courtyards of the city or simply
rent a horse and visit some of the other villages in the area. Overnight at guesthouse,
breakfast, lunch and dinner included.
24th May 2017 Day 12: Final day of the festival Tiji/visit Namgyal Gompa and
Tingkhar or Excursion to Chhoser (Western Valley)
Today, we walk to Namgyal Gompa, a monastery that lies on a hilltop. It is an important
monastery that serves as a local court to the local community people. After our visit to the
monastery, we continue our tour to Tingkhar, the last village to the northwest of
Lomanthang or excursion to western valley of Upper Mustang (optional). In the evening,
we return back to Lo Manthang and continue the celebration of Tiji festival. Overnight at
guesthouse. Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner included.
25th May 2017 Day 13: Trek Lo Manthang (3750m) to Yara (3580m).
Take same way back from Lo Manthang to Tsarang until Lo La pass and turn to left side.
Follow the small path which is dragging along the barren Collins and steep rocky
descending to the Die village. Die means a village a bid shadowed from windy and likely a
Lakeland make a lunch break here and step forehead to Yara along the small river
meanders and climb up to little typical designed settlement. The lodges are very simple and
have to eat local food what are available. If you are camping group it doesn't matter
everything will be supplied from trekking kitchen but if you are on lodge trekking, you have
to be satisfied by what you get. If you have longer time you can make a day break here and
hike up to visit Luri Gumba and Yara Ghara Gumba for day excursion. The famous
Bodisatwa padmasambhava ( Guru Rimpoche) had meditated in this cave for a long time so
it is considering the mighty holistic place. Overnight at Yara (3580m).
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included
26th May 2017 Day 14: Trek Yara (3580m) to Tangye (3320).
Today it could be strong day so morning breakfast should be made very early because you
have to cross pandey River. Hot lunch is not possible for the day so we must carry picnic
from Yara. If we start late, River grows higher because of ice melting and makes difficult for
cross. We have to take off shoes to cross the River. Many local people are running along the
bank looking for fossils because only this river flow them. After crossing; it turns to steady
up layer to layer like paper pages for couple of hours to the little col, then gradual
descending along brown barren lands to Tange. Overnight at Tangye (3320).
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included

people from this area used to live, but moved down after they learnt building houses. Cross
the suspension bridge and catch the way which leads to steady up to the hill top call Pa

Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, and Mustang Peak are visible from the way. The trail often leads along
the ridge so views of landscape and valley are quite interesting over the day. Walking in jig-
jack, one ridge to other ridge, hill to the other hill is long and challenging. It descends quite

Tiji festival trek 2017

  • 1. Tiji Festival Trek 2017 Mustang trek is an exploration of the concealed valleys of upper Mustang in Nepal, nestled between Tibet and the Himalayas – a place different from the rest of the world. The wall city of Lo Manthang used to be a part of Tibetan kingdom of Gungthang until 1830s. The early history of Lo Manthang is embellished in myths and legends rather then the recorded facts. Even though the upper Mustang is changing it still surprises the visitors with its stunning vista and the stubborn way it cling to its unique culture. Indeed the culture is fighting back, crumbing art works are being restored. Crumbing monasteries have been rebuilt and refilled with the sound of bald-headed children in robes studying the ancient Buddhist ways. There are around 275 houses in Lo Manthang having four castes: the royal caste, the everyday folk, the blacksmiths and the butchers and millers. The whole Lo manthang village has solar electricity now, along with a small herb garden of various holy decorations, flapping flags and of course stacked firewood. There was a time when it was the mandatory of certain family to supply the firewood for the royal family. Sky burial and polyandry are still remaining practice in this upper mustang region. Once Nepal got republic in 2005 the royal family is symbolic only. There are no any major effects or damage of April 2015 earthquake in the whole Mustang region – totally safe for trekking. Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and the Kathmandu Valley is the political and cultural heart of the Kingdom. Evening some briefing about Mustang Trek with trekking guide. Overnight at Kathmandu. 14th May 2017 Day 02 Fly: Kathmandu to Pokhara and transfer to Hotel. We fly from Kathmandu to the vibrant resort area of Lakeside, Pokhara, from where you can observe views to the north across the hills to the white peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, go boating on Fewa Lake or just wander around. Overnight at Pokhara (840m). Breakfast Included 15th May 2017 Day 03 Fly: Pokhara - Jomsom (2700m) and Trek to Kagbeni (2800m). Adventure Connexion team will take the spectacular early morning flight to Jomsom and begin our trek alongside the Kali Gandaki riverbed to the pretty village of Kagbeni. The trail is flat and quite barren, with craggy rocks and pebbles littering the trail. We get magnificent views of huge peaks such as Dhaulagiri, Tukuche and the Nilgiri Himal, whilst to the south can be seen the entire Annapurna Massif. Kagbeni with its narrow alleyways and tunnels, irrigation canals, fields of wheat and barley and large red gompa, gives us a preview of scenes that we will come across in Upper Mustang. At the north end of the village is the police check-post. Here we complete our paperwork before entering this long forbidden region of Nepal. (4 hours trekking). Overnight at Kagbeni (2800m). Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included Entry restricted areas permit 16th May 2017Day 04: Trek Kagbeni (2800m) to Chhuksang (2950m). It is possible to trek right up the river valley, but Adventure Connexion team use a combination of the high trail and the riverbank pathways. The trail itself enters a stark wilderness of towering cliffs eroded into fantastical shapes by the wind, which howls every afternoon, before widening significantly to reveal an endless stretch of sand. We should also encounter mule trains bearing goods to and from Mustang and Tibet. On the west bank of the river are some caves and Gompa Kang, which, unlike most monasteries in Upper Mustang, is of the Nyingmapa rather than the Sakyapa sect. Adventure Connexion team stop for lunch at the Thakali village of Tangbe, where we come across the first black, white and red chortens that typify Upper Mustang. The village is a labyrinth of narrow alleys among whitewashed houses, apple orchards and fields of buckwheat and barley. The Gurung village of Chhuksang is only about two hours walk beyond Tangbe at the confluence of the Narshing Khola (river) and the Kali Gandaki. There are three separate parts to Chhuksang and some ruined castle walls on the surrounding cliffs. Across the river
  • 8. are some spectacular red cliffs above the mouths of inaccessible caves. (4 hours). Overnight at Chhuksang (2950m). Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included 17th May 2017 Day 05: Trek Chhuksang (2950m) to Samar (3540m). There is a distinct change here, not only in topography, but also in the culture and lifestyle of the people. The settlements become more scattered, smaller and more basic and, due to a lack of rain and fertile soil, cultivation is limited to watered and sheltered plots of land, which decorate the brown landscape with patches of green. Many of the inaccessible caves high on the opposite side of the river were once used as living quarters or burial places. Continuing north, the Kali Gandaki becomes unfollowable, a steel bridge spans the river and the trek now leaves the valley and climbs steeply up a rocky gully to the village of Chele, where ferocious Tibetan mastiffs are chained to many of the houses. From Chele Adventure Connexion Team climb a steep spur and then continue ascending along the side of a spectacular steep canyon to Chele La (pass) at 3,630m. Beyond the pass we descend on a pleasant trail to a grove of poplar trees and the village of Samar. This is a major stopping place for horse and mule caravans. (4 hours). Overnight at Samar (3540m) Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included 18th May 2017 Day 06: Trek Samar (3540m) to Geling (3520m). Adventure Connexion Team will climb above Samar to a ridge and then descend into a large gorge before entering a valley filled with juniper trees. We then cross a stream and, after climbing to Bhena La (3,860m), descend along a ridge to Shyangmochen, a tiny settlement with a few tea-shops. Nearby is Rangbyung a cave containing stalagmites in the shape of a chorten and one of the holiest places in Mustang. The trail climbs gently to Shyangmochen La (3,850m) and we enter a huge valley before descending to the picturesque village of Geling with its extensive fields of barley. Like all the settlements in Mustang the white and ochre-painted houses in Geling are constructed of mud and stones and the roofs of twigs, straw and a mixture of mud and pebbles. (5 hours). Overnight at Geling (3520m). Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included 19th May 2017 Day 07: Trek Geling (3520m) to Dhakmar (3800m). After a scenic breakfast we head further up the trail and dirt road to the Nyi La (4000m), just a half hour climb from the intersection. More of Upper Mustang opens up in front of us a the cairn-topped pass, including the new road snaking its way to Tibet. We descend on the road for a bit, but soon head off on a small trail and continue contouring around hillsides to the Ghemi La where there are wonderful views down to the checkered fields and large, beautiful village of Ghemi (3570m). Adventure Connexion groups will descend steeply down to Ghemi, built along the steep edges of the cliff as are many fortified villages in Mustang. There are actually the ruins of an old fortress somewhere in Ghemi, which was largely abandoned until the Khampa fighters set up a magar (war camp) here and brought
  • 9. new life and wealth to the village. We'll wander a bit through this interesting village, passing the mani walls and prayer wheels, perhaps finding the key-keeper to open the Ghemi Gompa for us. Afterwards, we take a small, rocky trail down to a bridge crossing the Tangmar Chu and stop for lunch on the grassy banks of the river. Revived, we cross the bridge and climb a steep, dusty hill. The trail looks across the valley to ochre, blue and steel-grey cliffs, and leads us past tri-colored chortens and perhaps the longest and most spectacular mani wall in Mustang, behind which is the hospital. Looming ahead of us is a cluster of gigantic, ancient chortens, backed by dramatic, sculpted cliff-faces, an awesome sight. Overnight at Dhakmar (3800m). Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included 20th May 2017 Day 08: Trek Dhakmar (3800m) to Tsarang (3580m). After leaving Dhakmar we cross the Tangmar Chu (river) and ascend past the longest and most spectacular mani wall in Nepal before traversing to Choya La (3,870m). Once through the pass we make a long gentle descent to the former Lo capital of Charang, a large spread- out village atop the Charang Chu canyon. At the eastern end of the village are a huge dzong (fortress) and a red gompa which houses an excellent collection of statues and thangkas. Today’s walk is through perhaps the driest part of Mustang, and much of our energy will be spent negotiating the loose, dry soil. However, the magnificent views of the countryside, from the gentle contours of the north to the rugged mountains in the east and west, more than compensate for the hard walk. (3 hours). Overnight at Tsarang (3580m). Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included 21st May 2017 Day 09: Trek Tsarang (3580m) to Mustang Lo Manthang (3750m). Adventure Connection team will climb gently above the valley to a large isolated chorten that marks the boundary between Charang and Lo Manthang. The trail then broadens as we cross a multi-hued desert-like landscape and eventually we get our first view of the walled city of Lo Manthang. The city has only one entrance so we circumambulate the wall to the gate on the north-east corner. (4 hours). Overnight at Lo Manthang (3,730m). Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included 22nd May 2017 Day 10: Lo Manthang (3730m) – the celebration of the first day of Tiji festival Today is the first day of Tiji Festival.
