Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

THE IDEA

for the under- privileged youth of her community.

IMPACT
• Tiffany ran a“Get Your Mind Right” event which
allowed parents and students to talk about going
to college, safe sex, and entrepreneurship.

encourage youth to go to college, university, or a
Tiffany observed that many students are apathetic towards trade school.
attending college and have little or no knowlege about the
responsibilities of being an adult. Tiffany’s personal high school
experiences increased her concern that students in underserved
schools and communities were particularly prone to such attitudes.
Her determination to educate and change attitudes led Tiffany to
found “Redemption Inc.”, an organisation dedicated to the self-
empowerment and educational advancement of underserved youth
aged 13-19 in the Brooklyn area.
Redemption Inc. aims to boost self-esteem, alleviate economic
and social inequality, and prevent deferment of dreams through
educational, community service, and self-advocacy programs. Tiffany
shared her thoughts with other likeminded students of color who
helped to lay a solid foundation for Redemption Inc. and coined its What can i see on this picture and who is this guy?!
slogan - “Reclaim, Rebuild, Re-direct”. Redemption organized back to
school events such as “Get Your Mind Right” where school supplies
were given to the students in preparation for the school year.
Tiffany graduated Adelphi University in 2005 with a degree in
International Studies/Political Science. She decided to delay law
school in order to work full-time fostering an organization that
responds to the needs of marginalized families in New York City

communities. Tiffany has participated in the Police Athletic League
and the Anti-defamation League and their Task Force, the I.S 68
Neighborhood Beacon Program. She and Redemption Inc. have made
tremendous progress towards creating positive social change in their
