China regards Tibet as an integral part of China and is sensitive to expressions of support for the Dalai Lama, who fled into exile in 1959 after an uprising against Chinese rule. The Dalai Lama has accused China of stifling Tibetan culture and over 1.6 million Tibetans have been killed under Chinese occupation. Tibetans who oppose China face imprisonment, torture, or forced labor camps.
