2. CLINICAL EXAMINATION OF THYROID: LAHEY'S
METHOD
examination of the thyroid is
performed from the front.
The normal lobe of thyroid is
pushed to side of nodule so that
the solitary nodule can be made
prominent and palpated well.

the posterior surface of the
thyroid gland

4. CRILE'S METHOD
This method involves placing the
thumb on the thyroid gland and
asking the patient to swallow.
Small thyroid nodules within the
thyroid gland can be palpated
by this method

(1841 – 1917) was a Swiss Surgeon.
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
1909 was awarded to Theodor Kocher “for
his work on the physiology, pathology and
surgery of the thyroid gland“. Performed
over 5,000 thyroid excisions with a
reduction in mortality from 14% in 1884 to
0.18% in 1898

Upper eyelid lag on downward
gaze

32. DALRYMPLE'S SIGN and
CONJUNCTIVAL EDEMA

33. EXOPHTHALMOMETRY
Bilateral proptosis of more than 2 mm or a
difference between the two eyes of > 2 mm is
suspicious

34. GOFFROY'S SIGN
Absent forehead creases on superior gaze

35. GRIFFITH'S SIGN
Lower lid lag on upward gaze

36. MÖBIUS’ SIGN
Deficient convergence

37. NAFZIGER'S TEST
When looking down from behind the patient, the
cornea is visible in cases of exophthalmos
