Three ways to look at creativity
Three ways observation visualization composition
observation The Raw material principle More the choice of raw material – more the variety we can cook up Usually, children are made to get into “making” too soon. Soaking-in is imperative – the creative process is charged when we observe, observe and observe more.
observation Lets observe each other’s face; Features, lines and curves, colours, shades, textures, sizes, ratios between features, location on face, etc. Lets also observe the various masks given to us – both physical masks and pictures of masks. Lets close our eyes and feel the counters, texture etc of our own face and also each other’s . Compare how you feel your own skin as compared to others. Lets also feel the masks given to us. Lets also observe other textures, surfaces, outer coverings – bark of a tree, wall of a house, a wrapper and so on. Example: Create an African mask
visualization First see. Then see it differently . To see differently just change your point of view. Just like detectives see the crime from the thief's point of view. Not only different perspectives are refreshing to the mind – but they also stop the mind from getting conditioned, to settle down. Visualising is agitating the mind – yeast is required to create the bread
Visualize mask in different ways: You are the mask, now how does it feel and look? Imagine a bucket of water is like a mask or a mountain is like a mask or a bowl of cereals, … Imagine a mask walking by you. Or a mask talking to you or teaching you or as your enemy or friend or as your mother or … Imagine cars wearing masks or cricketers wearing them or a phone that look like a mask or …. visualization Example: Create an African mask
composition Constraints stir up imagination. The mind is tuned to thinking, doing and exploring different routes when it encounters any constrains. Close normal to open-up novel . Also, do not depend on eraser, rather embrace spontaneity !
Now start your work on the mask – but with constraints. Try, play around with: A masks made only out of circles / rings A masks made only of one colour One side of face mask A mask made of leaves A mask made by a bird A mask with each feature is double the size of the previous feature A mask with only eyes or more than three eyes A mask drawn with left (or other than normal) hand Example: Create an African mask composition
When one works from the premise of creativity one becomes very accepting and that helps. We realise that creativity is not a visually appealing painting, a pep music, but something that is more fundamental, more pervasive, ….. A thinking process, a way of life. C r e a t i v i t y
C r e a t i v i t y Creativity is within us. Creativity comes out with a constraint. Creativity is manifested as JOY
