What have I discovered about academic integrity during 20 years working in this field? This keynote presentation from Plagiarism Across Europe and Beyond reviews my personal journey from 2000 onwards and considers the challenges we will face maintaining academic integrity in the future. This talk explores examples of contract cheating from the computing discipline and beyond. It was originally presented as a teaching and learning seminar at London Metropolitan University. The talk includes an exploration of the prices paid by students when outsourcing work and the quality of work that they obtain. A number of examples are included. The talk also reviews the technical methods that are available for detecting contract cheating and includes suggestions of ways to develop assignments that minimise the opportunities for students to get away with not completing their own work.

One of the questions asked about research into homework help sites is if there are any ways to tell if students are using them to cheat or not. The requests could be innocent. This presentation, from the International Center for Academic Integrity Conference 2022, reviews data collected from Chegg and discusses initial attempts to verify that academic misconduct does take place on a homework help platform. It is was conducted with Imperial College London student Prakhar Nagpal.

These slides, from a presentation at the ICAS 2013 workshop, propose methods which can be used to detect student cheating in tests and assignments. They use computer systems that are both intelligent and context-aware. Three particular problems are explored, including contract cheating using auction and agency web sites, cheating using social media groups, and the issue of essay spinning, where automated translation sites can be used to change the appearance of a document and beat current plagiarism detection systems such as TurnItIn. The reasons why allowing cheating, plagiarism and contract cheating in these subjects are problematic are considered. The issues towards fitness for practice are explored. Examples of how students are using contract cheating sites to cheat across a variety of academic subjects are given.
