This thesis develops a methodological framework for evaluating public accessibility to services within a city. The framework collects data on public services and builds indicators to measure accessibility for different areas. It then applies statistics to understand resident profiles and examines both the number and minimum distances of services for each area. Finally, it combines these analyses to construct an ideal accessibility model and applies the model to Athens, identifying conclusions, deficiencies, and ways to improve future urban planning and the framework.

In this paper, we analyse the workflow behind the development of such an application. Using two examples based on worldwide development aid and refugee data, we discuss the steps from locating data for use and data integration, up to the actual visualization in a web-based application. At each step, we discuss the skill set required for completion and point to potential challenges. This includes RDF, SPARQL, HTTP requests, HTML, and JavaScript. We conclude the paper by putting our case study in the context of GIScience curriculum development.

Using FME to Manipulate Various Sources of Data for Traffic Collision Spatio-...Safe Software
It is of interest to explore the spatial correlation between traffic collisions and other types of available data, for example demographic and economic information, land-use, license premises and weather. To effectively prepare the data for further analysis, the City of Edmonton Office of Traffic Safety used a series of extract-transform and load (ETL) tools provided by FME. This presentation will introduce three key ETL processes performed with FME: 1) manipulate roadway GIS data for network-based spatial analysis; 2) build spatial connection between various sources of data; 3) effectively prepare the proper format of spatial data to establish advanced spatial statistics.

Hydraulic jump is considered as the best way for dissipating energy present in moving water downstream of hydraulic structures. This paper conducted laboratory experiments to investigate the hydraulic jump characteristics variations for different rectangular open channel layouts. In this paper, the used open channel layouts were five bed slopes of 0.0175, 0.0349, 0.0524, 0.0699, and 0.0875, and a sill with three different heights was placed along a model of the stilling basin at three different longitudinal distances. The characteristics of the hydraulic jump, which was formed downstream vertical gate, were measured for variable discharges.

The Evolution of Traditional Urban Survey using Applicable Surveying TechniquesIJMER
This research deals with how to facilitate and manage surveying methods to accomplish
modernized and cost effective urban survey with best achievable accuracy. This is done by replacing
traditional surveying methods with modern methods from both theoretical and practical point of view. At
first, a theoretical assessment process on a tradition urban planning project in Saudi Arabia is
performed by replacing traditional urban planning techniques previously used with more applicable
surveying techniques as total stations regarding different matters such as applicability, cost and
accuracy. After approving the main idea of this modernization process, a practical urban planning case
study is performed using total station, geodetic GPS receivers and GPS navigators, on a private
settlement block consisting of 6 buildings in a crowded neighborhood of Cairo city. The applied
surveying techniques showed high efficiency regarding cost and effort, while saving observation time
reaching to 60%. Accordingly, the adopted practical application proved to be beneficial for all desired
aspects, as well as being promising for more extensive study areas in future.

ABSTRACT
This paper presents an innovative analytical framework to
address incomplete interpretations and dispersed data of the
energy system in cities, which usually generate multiple
inefficiencies. Integrative city planning takes the city energy
system from the supply to the demand while considering its
spatial representativeness, and drives optimal cost-efficient
assessment towards future sustainable energy targets. This
holistic approach delivers more adequate policies and measures
towards higher energy use efficiency.
The proposed analytical framework has been developed within
the INSMART EU funded project and focuses on data gathering
procedures and data processing tools and models, covering a
wide range of city’s energy consumers, as residential buildings,
transport and utilities. The results, mapped into a GIS, can be
further exploited either for awareness increase of citizens and
for decision support of city energy planners.

1. INTRODUCTION
Cities are vital for engaging with environmental issues since its
activities affect the environment locally, regionally and globally
in both negative and positive ways [5]. Climate change and the
reduction of energy consumption are challenging topics for
cities and their territorial organization. A number of initiatives
(e.g. [1, 2]) have been set up to engage cities in efforts towards a
low carbon future and an improved quality of life through
sustainable economic development.
Smart cities appeal for a coordinated energy, water,
transportation, public health and safety services towards an
efficient management of the critical infrastructure to assure end-
use services for all citizens. There is a critical need for
integrated comprehensive city planning [12], focused on ex-ante
cost-benefit assessment and using energy systems models
towards urban sustainable energy use.
This allows moving from a reactive urban management to a
proactive approach based on knowledge and supported by the
increasing availability of the IoT (Internet of Things) and
information and communicati.

Transportation planning is an important part in the development of a region. An effective transport
system and associated urban forms will improve the economic and social opportunities. Accessibility and
mobility are the two main parameters which contribute to the effective transportation system. In this paper, the
accessibility to the public transportation system is identified for the selected study area with the help of an
indexing system. The sub-area in the region was thus graded based on their accessibility and the obtained
values are found to resemble the real world.

Configurational Economies: The Value of Accessibility in Urban Development drboon
This research is an effort to understand the theoretical foundations of how the configuration of space is interrelated with the economic properties that sustain the built fabric. The argument is based on unfolding accessibility in two perspectives: As a spatial parameter that understands urban form as a system of relational patterns of connections that organises human activity. And as an economic parameter that can be valued under specific price mechanisms of urban properties. The paper shows a first preliminary study of testing street prices with spatial accessibility measures. The method was to use current house prices with Space Syntax techniques, a spatial analysis tool that outputs measures of connectivity and accessibility represented in a street network. Overall, economy contributes on the shape of our cities that prevail in the spatial relations of the built form, resulting in new configurational economies.

1 INTRODUCTION
Modern cities are increasingly turning towards

with demographic changes, urbanization, climate
change (Romero Lankao, 2008) and globalization.
Therefore, most cities have undertaken significant
investments during the last decade in ICT
infrastructure including computers, broadband

sensing, urban logistics and ambient assisted living.

ABSTRACT
This thesis is concerned with the composition of a methodological framework for the
evaluation of an area within a city as regards the inhabitants’ accessibility to public
services and the role of the varied features of the inhabitants, which influence this
accessibility. Accordingly, we examine the possibilities of the implementation of the
suggested model to the municipality of Athens. Both for the creation and the
application of the above framework we have employed the theories of the Spatial
Analysis and GIS.
The first part of our thesis refers to the collection of all those data that are necessary
for the construction of the concept of accessibility and the formation of the indicators
of accessibility to whole squares of buildings. In the second part, by the application of
statistic data we deduce the profile of the building blocks along with crucial
information about the area and its inhabitants.
Next, we evaluate the accessibility of building squares to public services by examining
both the number of public services and their minimum distance from each building
block.
At the final stage of this project, we attempt to combine the above results with a view
to construct an ideal area archetype for accessibility. By applying this model to the
municipality of Athens, we have come to important conclusions which could be
employed in the future urban planning of this city, and have also underlined
deficiencies as well as ways of improvement of the above framework.
