THEORIES OF ETHICS
Porsha Clayborn
RELATIVISM
• Relativism, holds that ethical values and judgments are ultimately dependent upon,
or relative to, one’s culture, society, or personal feelings.
Pros
Takes the role of culture seriously.
Everyone is equal.
Cons
Open attitudes.
Personal bias.
UTILITARIANISM
• Utilitarianism is an ethical tradition that directs us to make decisions based on the
overall con- sequences.
Pros
Promotes efficiency and
Rational and fair.
Cons
Individual rights are ignored.
Tendency to ignore obligation.
BUSINESS ISSUE
A company that provides home health for the elderly are supposed to supply their
employees with two boxes of gloves every month. Recently the company has not
given the employees any gloves to work with. Is it ethical for the employees to buy
their own gloves or should the company follow it’s rules and regulations and supply
them to the employee.
RELATIVISM DECISION
• If I was making this decision the relativism way, I would decide that the company
should supply the employees with gloves so that they can do their jobs effectively.
UTILITARIANISM DECISION
• If I was making this decision the utilitarianism way, I would decide that the company
should reach out to someone that can fund the employees with gloves to do their
jobs the safe way.
