Early Christians left society and went to live in the desert, following the examples of Jesus and Moses. Hermits went first, but they soon formed monasteries where they could support each other through prayer and guidance. Antony of Egypt was one of the first desert monks, known for his wisdom, healing, and generosity. Monasteries provided hospitality and focused on seeking God. The Rule of Basil influenced monastic life in the East. Both Jerome and Augustine were influential scholars and converts who lived monastic lives. Jerome translated the Bible into Latin. Augustine confronted heresies and wrote about how humans have a tendency to sin but can overcome it through God's grace.
