Write a creative title for your essay
Consider that the title is the first opportunity you have to inform your reader about the thesis of your essay
NEVER just write “Evaluation Essay”
Capitalize the title correctly
Format the essay with double-spacing and page numbers
FIRST THINGS FIRST
The purpose of an introduction is to:
engage the reader
provide background information
present the thesis
Unless necessary for contextualization, save the evidence to support your claims in the body paragraphs.
Don't serve the main meal at the same time as the appetizer!
Too many details in the introduction:
"Air travel is a form of travel in vehicles that can sustain flight". (Really? No kidding!)
Don't start your essay with a definition of what is probably unnecessary: obesity, global warming, cell phones, the internet, etc.
The purpose of simply taking up space is too obvious and wastes opportunity to craft useful sentences that further your essay.
ONLY use a definition if writing about something truly obscure.
Avoid Useless "definitions"
The trick to avoid these words: insert “as opposed to?”
Basically, very, really, literally, truly, personally (as opposed to...?)

Using Words that Do Not Add Meaning

Avoid these space fillers! Instead - just write what you are saying.
Don't waste space saying what you WILL write about or what you already wrote.
Example:
Wrong: In this essay I will argue that cell phones should not be used while drive.
Better: Cell phones should not be used while driving.
Announcing Yourself to the Reader
Did you ever get tired of reading essays with questions?
Do you think that these questions would be stronger written as statements?
Are all the questions necessary?
Do they engage the reader?
Especially in a repeating pattern: did you ever wonder, did you ever think, why is it that... blah blah blah?
STOP!
And if writing a question, remember to use a question mark when creating a question, even if it's a rhetorical question.

CHAPTER 9Section 9.1 The First Draft
Writing is more akin to running a marathon than a sprint: Pacing yourself for a longer run
that has a varying terrain is the best mental approach to writing. In writing an essay, your
terrain consists not only of the prewriting process discussed in Chapter 4 but also the revis-
ing, editing, and proofreading stages. When a writer tries to sprint through one or more
of these stages rather than taking the leisurely marathon route, the final writing product
suffers. Depending on the length of the assignment and the amount of time given to com-
plete it, revising, editing, and proofreading should occur over the course of many days, if
not weeks. Like marathon running, writing requires conditioning and patience: The more
a writer conditions and paces herself, the easier it is to produce a successful final draft.
9.1 The First Draft
Always assume that you will need to spend a lot of time revising your papers. Plan to set aside the required time and avoid procrastination. All of the prewriting materials you have composed, such as an outline or a mind map, will assist you in
generating the first draft of your paper. Reread those drafting materials several times to
gain a sense of how to respond to a particular writing prompt and how to best organize
your ideas. Look for the tentative thesis, the synthesis of ideas you wrote out while brain-
storming. Refer to the tentative outline to structure the order of main points and evidence
that might be used. Note main ideas and concepts that you arrived at while brainstorming.
Getting Content Down on Paper
On writing a first draft, Irish author Frank O’Connor states, “I write any sort of rubbish
which will cover the main outlines of the story, then I can begin to see it (Winokur, 1990,
p. 243). Joyce Cary, another Irish writer, shares his method of drafting this way: “I may
start anywhere, in the middle or at the end. I may go from the end to the beginning in the
same day, and then from the beginning to the middle” (Winokur, 1990, p. 244).

Writing/Typing Requirements:
- The paper should be typed double-spaced.
- Use topics/subtopics to separate your paper.
- Use good writing style – introductory/ conclusion sentences for paragraphs, complete
sentences, transitions between paragraphs/sections
- References – you should have at least 6 references and you should put them at the end of
the paper (use whatever style you like on this as long as the references are complete). Be
sure you indicate in the body of the paper where the references are used.
- Please write in your own words – “borrowing” significant portions of quoted material
without attributing it to an author is plagiarism. Even if you use your own words and
they are not your thoughts, you still need to reference the material. (NOTE: I will run
papers through a plagiarism program, so be careful to use your own work.)
- Use tables for financial information (also acceptable to use tables for other information).
