The Failure of Skepticism: Rethinking Information Literacy and Political Pol...
Fake news has been shown to spread far faster than facts on social media platforms. Rampant fake news has led to deep political polarization and the undermining of basic democratic institutions. Skepticism is an important component of information literacy and has often been pointed to as the antidote to the fake news epidemic. Why are skepticism and information literacy failing so terrifically in this post-truth era?
The presenters will summarize research drawn from the fields of psychology and mass communication that shows just how hardwired people are to believe information from their own “tribes” and resist outside contrary information.
How we think about and teach skepticism and information literacy is in need of an overhaul for the twenty-first century. This webinar will introduce some ideas for that overhaul and will also provide practical classroom activities that do a better job of addressing the cognitive aspects of information literacy and skepticism.

The program will expand our perspectives and appreciation for our blue planet, build new foundations for our relationship to the ocean, and ignite a wave of action toward necessary change.

About the World Factbook Produced by the CIA Information is found using the Intelligence Cycle The information comes from sources all around the world The information found is important because it: Can help someone to learn about different countries Show how cultures differ Educate people about the world on many levels from differing military to what religions are popular in what areas The information is updated on a weekly basis

Things I have learned In studying and working with the World Factbook I have learned: The United States is the third largest country in terms of area with 9,826,675 square miles of land, Russia and Canada are the only larger countries Niger has the lowest median age of all the country at only 15.2 The United States has 13,513 airports which is the most in the world European Union has the highest current account balance with $351,900,000,000 ,the United States is last in the world with - $460,600,000,000
- 4. My questions How many students actually know about this resource? This would be a great resource for students in many different classes or even just curious people to use but I feel that most do not know about it How accurate is the information? Some of the information says it is from 2012 or earlier so how can we know if it is still a reliable number or not?
- 5. How to find out if most students know about the resource Hypothesis: Null: Most students know about the resource but do not discuss it in school Alternate: Most students do not know this resource exists and it is not utilized by many Population of interest: Students of all education levels

How to find out if most students know about the resource Sample participants: To get participants a simple questionnaire could be given out asking if they have heard of the World Factbook, know what it is, and if they have used it before Length of the experiment: To get reliable data the questionnaire would be given online in order to draw as many participants as possible and would only run until the researcher had enough participants
