The tremendous popularity of social networking sites like Facebook presents libraries with unique opportunities for reaching students. What many organizations fail to realize, however, is that the presence of professors, librarians, or parents in this social space is often perceived as intrusive, unwelcome, or just plain "weird". Researchers at a small university library decided to take a step back and ask a critical question: what do our students really want? That is, how do our students really use Facebook, and what part can the library play in this social environment? The library literature provides some insights; many of these recommendations, however, are from the perspective of librarians and do not reflect students' expectations, experiences, or preferences. Researchers conducted a mixed methods study of students' use of Facebook, focusing on the intersection of students' academic and social lives in this platform. Results indicated that students are uncertain about the library and librarians using Facebook, but are willing to consider accessing the library through this platform in the right circumstances. By listening to students' concerns and identifying standards for interaction, the researchers made recommendations for restructuring the library's Facebook initiatives. This panel will offer an overview of this study and its implications for library outreach efforts in Facebook. This panel will explore the conflict between the literature's best practices and students' expectations for library behavior in Facebook. A discussion of the library's experiences in implementing and refining its Facebook campaign will facilitate a broader consideration of the opportunities social networking sites present for libraries.

Reading is an “habitus”, a suit that could fit tight, or loose, that we need to try on a couple of times in the dressing room before choosing to buy it. The school library is a guest-house, a place in which kids, especially culturally deprived ones, must feel safe and welcome to talk about stories, experiences, opinions. A forum to meet books of course, but also readers. A workshop meant to sew our personal reader’s habitus, rejuvenating it from its old mousy image and preparing it for us to grow inside it.

Eleanor Gehman Address City State Zip March 19, 2012 Dr. Jane Doe Chair, Librarian Search Committee Perfect Library 1 Library Way Anywhere PA 11111 Dear Dr. Jane Doe, “Can you help me find some sources on the War of Castilian Succession?” This student, hesitant to approach the Reference desk and simultaneously frustrated with her efforts to research her topic, brought to me my most challenging reference question yet. After an exhaustive search, I finally found some materials to help her (an article about the treaty ending the war and a book on one of the royals involved). This interaction reinforced my desire to instruct and assist students with their research process, from the spark of an idea to the final formation of a bibliography. Through my internships in academic libraries and my coursework at the School of Information Sciences, I have developed a keen interest in the reference world of checking citations and interviews with students. Students, like the one in the anecdote above, often view librarians with a sense of distance and hesitance. Am I bothering her? Can she really help me? These thoughts, though misguided, are common. That’s why social media is so critical to librarians today. We can utilize popular social media tools to reach out to students, create a participatory environment where patrons can have a say in what their library offers, and embrace communication between librarians and patrons. I believe the use of social media is key to ushering in the new Library 2.0 principles in every library, which is why I volunteered to create and maintain the internal blog at Washington & Jefferson College’s library. While this blog is closed to all except staff, the experience of shared communication amongst librarians is invaluable.
